  31. 5.0 McFeeters Motor Museum (139 reviews)
    - Awesome Collection

    McFeeters Motor Museum image
When we visited we were lucky to have Bill McFeeters show us around his fabulous collection of vehicles. He told us he started collecting in the early 60’s and the number of vehicles grew to such a large number that he and his wife decided a very impressive custom building to house the collection. He has wonderful vintage cars which he still takes for a drive every now and then. He also owns the first Rolls Royce that was painted white. He even lets you sit in one of his old girls, as long as you don’t fart, and takes your photo. What I really like is there are so many cars from different eras and his wife has set up manikins with period costume. A number of the dresses including the wedding dress are her own. Well worth a visit, loved it. See more..

    - Devonian fishes. Glad I wasn't swimming with them....
Monday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
The Age of Fishes Museum image
Inside of museum has displays of fossils found near the road outside Canowindra. Site of a big "fish kill" that occurred in the Devonian period. They have computer simulations of the fish showing what they looked like swimming which are pretty interesting, along with the story of how the fossils were found and where they sit in an historical context. Outside there is a time line which you can walk around showing what was on Earth and where the various continents were at that time. There is sort of snakes and ladders timeline game for the kids. Kids can fossick in a sand pit, find a red rock and present it at the front desk for a shark's tooth fossil. Also a gift shop with teatowels etc. Nicely laid out and worth a visit. I also recommend strolling down the main street (which is full of country town architecture, including an almost unchanged 1950's style cafe) and visiting the great second hand bookshop that is there. See more..

We had no idea of the history of the area let alone the Gaol until we visited. We visited on a Sunday and paid our $4 each into an honesty box and took ourselves around. The displays are excellent, illustrating life in the region in the early days. Loved the Aboriginal artefacts, what a rich heritage. The farming equipment and early living conditions including household goods, clothes, radios and appliances are great. But what really amazed us was the Gaol itself, the thickness of the walls, the darkness and coolness inside. It had been used as a Gaol, hospital, POW camp during the war and what rather upset me was a home for girls. Those poor girls. See more..

We weren't planning on visiting this museum but the lady in the Cooma information centre highly recommended it. As it was only a gold coin donation for entry we thought we had nothing to lose. It's probably not for parents who are too precious. The tour was conducted by a combination of guards and inmates. The highlight of the tour for our kids was being able to pull the lever and operate the gallows. Very informative and a real eye opener for the whole family. My kids are now determined never to end up in prison as they were informed they wouldn't have access to Wifi See more..

Was an great afternoon at the museum with a amazing presentation of history and very informative to all my family. We attended with 4 generations of our family, we have a large history of military in our family with, my father who was with us being in the RAAF for many years. I would also like to thank WO11 Black who showed us around, shared memories with my dad and mum, had many laughs, and looked after my grandson (7) who is tank mad. My dad told me he had a great day there that he won't forget. Thank you so much. See more..

We decided to go to the National Motor Transport Museum. It was a wonderful display of bikes and cars and all transport items in between. My husband loved the motorcycles as he had had a lot of them throughout his life and it brought back good or not so good memories. The vehicles were great with a huge selection. I loved the double decker bus. I had come home every afternoon on one of these during my high school years. Great memories! Great museum with something for everyone. See more..

We didn't enter at $10 per adult. But we did appreciate the external building which is worthy to see early bottle building. I know the Black Queen was once more high end bottle architecture, but this is no longer open to public. This bottle house may have got us as paying customers if entry was $4. The dog house was cute. Many country town museums have a selection of old rusty farming equipment and some photos, this place is not the usual. We stopped for a brief look and ended up staying for over an hour going through the museum. The entry way has a series of large paintings telling the story of Captain Thunderbolt's death, it is worth the time to read the captions as they story provides context for other items in the museum. The rest of the display is an interesting mix of items relating to Thunderbolt, personal war history of residents, other notable Tenterfield people, and some great samples of old fire engines, buggies, unusual farming equipment (not rusty saws). The building itself was an old mill and is quite interesting, there is a lovely garden too. At $15 for a family it was good value. See more..

This was about $5 to enter from memory...so relatively cheap. There is the building that Don was born in and another house that is full of historical items. There is also a video to watch to learn about Don. I have to admit I am not a fan of cricket, but I am rather impressed by the man who was born here. He believed in his sport, he believed in Australia, in community and in people. So even if you are not a cricket fan, this is an interesting place to visit. And it really is the place that he was born... not a family home like I thought when I arrived, but rather it was like a maternity hospital back in the day. It just makes sense that if you are in town that you visit this museum if nothing else. See more..
