Lush green lawns await at this well organised picnic area. Paved roads all the way to a moderate car park, tables and BBQ's with an inspiring outlook over the dam and wall. Kids playground to one side, and plenty of space to lay down a rug. Walk down to the dam and you can follow a track past a Platypus habitat. A truly beautiful end of the world to visit. See more..
  2. 4.0 Warragamba Dam (53 reviews)
    - Wonderful history and water storage facility.
    Dams
    Warragamba Dam image
In present Covid times, the visitor centre is closed. However, the numerous information boards, throughout the public viewing and picnic areas, provide more than enough information on the history and operations of Sydney's largest water storage facility. Viewing spots are numerous, entry and parking is free, toilets and picnic facilities available. Most physical abilities should be able to access sufficient areas to take in key sights. There are stairs down to the top of the dam wall, and lower views of the spillway, but both can also be accessed on foot by bitumen road, although a steepish return journey (signs at top said 1.7km return). Signs suggest weekday access to the dam wall may be restricted if maintenance or other work being undertaken. See more..

    Cataract Dam image
Despite a rather uninviting name, this is truly a lovely place to visit! Wide open body and awe-inspiring dam that would captivate you the moment you reach your destination. Not difficult to get to. Waze and Google Maps will accurately get you to the spot. I enjoyed the tranquility of the place. Not well-known to most people, so likely you can have the entire place to yourself... which I did! Will surely visit this place again. See more..

We went to Cowarra Dam for a picnic. It is such a lovely spot not far out of Wauchope. When we were there we were the only ones there. With lovely views over the storage dam there are picnic tables and bbqs. There is a great sculpture garden and mosaics and is always well maintained. See more..
  8. 4.0 Chaffey Dam (12 reviews)
    - Day trip
    Spent 1-2 hours Dams
    Chaffey Dam image
A great dam of water and grounds between Tamworth and Nundle that is also used for recreational purposes. Camping, swimming, fishing, water-skiing, walking and boating. Great to see the level of water in this dam as 2 years ago when we were there, it was very low. Rough roads around the dam to get to your 'fav' spots and 1 section is closed to the public for the fishing club. This adds to the excitement but can be difficult if you're towing and not driving a 4xwheel drive. Main camping area is easily accessed and has the showers/ toilet block. Got to take your rubbish with you. Love returning to this area and the colours, reflection, animal life etc make a great place for us amateur photographers. See more..

  10. 5.0 Carcoar Dam (9 reviews)
    - Great Spot
    Spent 1-2 hours Dams
    Carcoar Dam image
We went out to have a look at Carcoar Dam. It is such a pretty spot. There were a few people camped there. There are amenities with cold showers and there is a tank for drinking water. We stopped and read about the power generating wind turbines which was very interesting. We also drove up and had a look at the dam itself. There is also a launching ramp for boating or putting in a kayak. The dam isn’t very large do a kayak would be good. We put the foot in the memory banks if we pass by again and want a quiet place to stay off the highway. See more..
  11. 4.5 Dumaresq Dam (5 reviews)
    - Beautiful, relaxing family spot

    Dumaresq Dam image
Built between 1896 and 1898 the dam provided Armidale's water until the 1968, when Malpas Dam was completed. Now a stunningly beautiful place to spend a few hours - bring a boat and have a paddle, throw in a line or just take a walk around the perimeter - an easy-going stroll that takes 20 minutes or so. Lots of bird-life and wildlife to see (watch out for snakes) or just sit on the grassy edges, use the barbecues and sheltered eating area, or kick a ball on the large grassed open area. It really is a beautiful part of the countryside outside the main town and a lovely scenic drive to get there. Well worth going. See more..
  12. 3.0 Malpas Dam (5 reviews)
    - Photogenic but restricted access to water
    Dams
    Malpas Dam image
Scenic when there is water especially in the summer. No access to the water as it is the main source of drinking water for two towns. No fishing is allowed unless you are a member of local fishing club.No picnic facilities, no good lookout or toilet, only a picnic table and a shed. See more..
  13. 4.5 Split Rock Dam (4 reviews)

Spent More than 3 hours Dams
    Split Rock Dam image
We love a dam! And Split Rock Dam is worth the drive up to the viewing area. The dam itself is not open to the public, but there is a turnoff just before the top to the water sports area - perfect for a picnic. Spotted some huge birds of prey circling high above the dam. See more..

  16. 4.0 Emigrant Creek Dam (1 review)
    - An engineering feat among beautiful surroundings
    Spent < 1 hour Dams
    Emigrant Creek Dam image
Emigrants Dam lookout gives a good glimpse of the man’s ability to tame waterways and get better use of water resources before it is lost to the ocean. It is the spill that is visible to the lookout. Water of the reservoir was about half a meter below the spill level. I could imagine how beautiful the scene would be during rainy season when the dam is spilling over at this point! The track leading to the lookout goes through a rain forest where wild stag horns can be seen beautifully growing on tree trunks. See more..
