    St. Mary's Cathedral image
St Mary’s Cathedral stands on the site of the first Catholic Chapel in Australia. Constructed in local sandstone, the Gothic Revival style of its architecture is reminiscent of the great medieval cathedrals of Europe. The Cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of Immaculate Mother of God, Help of Christians. Architect William Wilkinson Wardell was commissioned by Archbishop Polding to design a new St Mary’s following the fire of 1865 which ruined the original Cathedral. Parishioners and visitors are welcome to join us for daily Mass or to join one of our Free Guided tours. Sundays at 2pm, from 2 October 2022. See more..

We always try to check out the local churches when travelling regionally as they tend to be really beautiful with great architecture. This example in Armidale is really beautiful and it is a large Cathedral with mosaic floor tiles. A man who was outside the church when we were there have a detailed description and pointed out some of the architectural elements of the church. See more..

This beautiful century old church sits on the hill overlooking Bodalla and is well worth the short drive to visit. Very imposing overlooking the Eurobodalla valley it is a shame that in this day and age it is necessary to lock church doors when services are not taking place. The front of the church faces west and has large stained glass windows that you imagine would be spectacular. See more..

What began in the mid 1850's has grown over the many years since to evolve into the beautiful Cathedral Church you see today. Not overly big in comparison to others it is still a striking building and is currently undergoing renovation. We sneaked in to view the beautiful interior & chatted to the Parish Priest. We decided to spend the long weekend in Bathurst and went out to explore the historic sights. Hill End and Sofala proved disappointing so we decided to do the walking tour of Bathurst city. We discovered the tour of the Bell tour which was adjacent to All Saints Cathedral. This proved to be an absolute delight. The tour was led by Chris, who was both a wonderful source of information and incredibly passionate about his Bell Ringing. The tour included an historical talk, a tour of the bell tour and the best view of Bathurst from the top of the tower. At the top of the tower Chris rang the bell so that we could experience what happens when the bells ring (headsets provided). We have visited bell towers in Europe but never had such a close up view of the bells and experienced a bell tower like this. Chris gave us a great afternoon, a very unexpected surprise. See more..

    St. Bede's Parish image
This beautifully maintained church stands in the middle of the main road in Braidwood. Both the church itself and the grounds are immaculate but the church bell really is impressive. The one disappointing thing that is now a sign of the times and not a reflection on the church wardens is that outside of service times the main buildings have to be locked. This is unfortunate as visitors do not get the opportunity to enjoy what is usually a beautiful interior. See more..

The foundation stone of St Paul's Church was laid in January 1845.Constructed in brick, the building was designed by Edmund Blacket in a simple decorated Gothic style. Edmund Thomas Blacket (25 August 1817 – 9 February 1883) was an Australian architect, best known for his designs for the University of Sydney, St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney and St. Saviour's Cathedral, Goulburn. The building was first used for worship in 1848 and the building consecrated in the following year. In 1874-75, the tower and shingled wooden spire were added. It's a pretty church that you will notice if you drive through this small village... it's postcard prettiness draws your attention. See more..

  28. 3.0 St Patrick’s Catholic Church (1 review)
    - Unusual to look at
    Churches & Cathedrals
    St Patrick’s Catholic Church image
In 1883, a European boundary rider Charles Rasp discovered rocks that would change the Australian economic industry for generations. Charles came across some silver looking rocks while collecting sheep around modern day Silverton, located in far west NSW. The discovery would then become one of the world’s largest ore deposits. Broken Hill, known as the ‘ Silver City, ‘ was also born. In addition, the discovery gave birth to a new diocese, the diocese of Wilcannia. The diocese of Wilcannia would become the largest in New South Wales stretching over 414, 39 sq. km. This church stood out in Brewarrina for me firstly because there was no signage to tell me what it was... usually a church would have a sign at the front with the services held there. The church is active ... I did some research... why there is no sign is anyone's guess. But the main reason it caught my eye is because it looks odd to me... like a Mish-mash of two eras. The plaque on the building simply says- "This stone was blessed and laid by the most Rev.Thomas.M.Fox. D.D Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes on the 28th April 1940. Rev F Meacher, Pastor". So I could believe the brick work may have been done in he 1940s but that other part of the building... it looks like it's been added. It has a Spanish look to me, but then I am no architect... I simply found it interesting to look at on the day. See more..

    St Paul’s Anglican Church image
Positioned on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, the small town of Darlington Point is a tranquil spot, with plenty of outdoor opportunities. This small town is quiet- this is my second visit. When settlement takes place in any town, the churches became an important part of the community. This one would have been no different. There appears to be a retirement village next to this one. As for the church ....the Foundation stone was laid on 15 August 1923 by Ernest Augustus Anderson Bishop of Riverena. Anderson was born in Milton Damerel, Devon, England and educated at Bedford School and Queens' College, Cambridge. He went to North Queensland as a mission preacher in 1882, and was ordained deacon the same year, and priest in 1883. He was installed in Hay, New South Wales as the second Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Riverina, New South Wales Australia, on 11 February 1896, at a time of financial difficulty for the church. By the turn of the century, new towns were flourishing throughout the Riverina, as the growing wheat industry gave the district a much needed economic boost. Anderson retired from active ministry in 1925, leaving twice as many parishes in the diocese as he took over originally. See more..

    St Paul's Presbyterian Church image
This is a picture postcard church... it's so pretty. Even as you walk towards it ... it's like it's too pretty to be a church...too quaint... too dainty. This Church was the second place of Christian worship built in Blayney. The foundation stone was laid in July 1861 and the church was opened on 6 April 1862 with Reverend James Adam holding the first church service. In 1870. The building was enhanced by the addition of an attractive bell tower, with shingled steeple. The cost of St Paul’s was £300 (equivalent to about $600) exclusive of the pulpit and seats. It's entirely charming and worth stopping to admire. See more..

    St James' Catholic Church image
You can't miss this church if you are in town, it's very prominent and probably a stand out for the buildings in town... it's really attractive. There are a couple of stones that were laid to identify when this was built... The first one I noted was indicating that the stone was laid and blessed by Rev. T.M.Fox D.D. who was the Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes on the 16th June 1935. ( He also laid the stone for St Aloysius Memorial Catholic Church in Forbes) But the second stone says that it was solemnly consecrated on the 10th December in 1936 by the Most Rev. T.M.Fox D.D. This church was built in the interwar years which I found interesting because I didn't think there was a lot of money around at that time, but clearly a lot of money was used to built such a beautiful church. In the garden next to it is the St James Parish Cross commemorating the pastors and parishioners of St. James parish. See more..
  32. 4.0 Christ Church (1 review)
    - Gothic style

    Christ Church image
Blayney has some eye-catching old churches... this one seems to take something of a Gothic style and whilst it's not as large as some Gothic churches I have visited, it's certainly an attractive build. This group of three buildings includes the church, hall and rectory built over a 40-year period. The church was constructed in two stages, first – the nave in 1872 and second – in 1891 a chancel and transepts were added. A tower forms the porch and is topped by a turret with four pinnacles in Gothic style which replaced the original shingle spire later during church renovations. The church was consecrated in 1901 when it was free of all debt. The foundation stone of the rectory was laid in November 1879 and completed in 1880. With distinct features of the Victorian Italianate style, it has a steep pitched roof, decorative barge board and faceted bay windows. The hall, erected in 1909 has a dormer window above the porch and an ornamental timber valance of the Federation Queen Anne period. See more..

    Finley Presbyterian Church image
The earliest Presbyterian church services in Finley were held at Tuppal Station and conducted by the Minister from Deniliquin. The foundation stone for the church building was laid in October 1919. It was opened jointly by Mrs J T Close and Miss Christina McAllister, by opening the two front doors at the same time in March 1920. The official opening and dedication was held in August 1920 with the Rev C H Hain officiating. But if you want to stop here ... you really do need to because it looks like a castle crossed with a church. :) It's actually a very pretty church. See more..

    Sacred Heart Catholic Church image
This church being at the end of a street is REALLY eye-catching. The first Roman Catholic was built in 1870. The Foundation stone of the current church was laid on 8 February 1916... but that would also explain why there is a memorial to fallen soldiers on the gate... it was built in that era where the war was taking place. Behind it in the Catholic school grounds is the original Catholic Church built in stone in 1870. You cannot help but find the size of this church a bit overwhelming... it's now over 100 years and is a serious statement piece particularly because of when it was built. See more..

St Laurence O' Toole Catholic Church image
How did I end up in a back street in Cobar? The church is huge... my photos do not do it justice! However perhaps that's simply the perception because of the red brick colour against the sun drenched buildings around it. You will see it because it stands out. The other interesting thing when I arrived at this church was that it was open... I just walked in. No-one was there so I could look around to my heart's content. But where did it all start? Who is Laurence? Lorcán Ua Tuathail, known in English as Laurence O'Toole and in French as Laurent d'Eu (1128 – 14 November 1180), was Archbishop of Dublin at the time of the Norman invasion of Ireland. Lorcán played a prominent role in the Irish Church Reform Movement of the 12th century and mediated between the parties during and after the invasion. He was canonised in 1225 by Pope Honorius III. Seems he was pretty important so it makes sense to have large church in the Outback named after him. The Foundation Stone of The Church of St Laurence O'Toole was laid by the Most Rev J Dunne DD Bp of Wilcannia - 15th October A.D. 1905. See more..

Remember the old fashioned Christmas cards from the 50s? Me neither... I wasn't born then. Seriously though, yes I have seen them. The artwork on them was a church with snow and it was so pretty. I always wondered where those churches were when I saw the romantic images on cards. Well those churches aren't in Australia because snow isn't something that we experience a whole lot... but this church still reminds me of those cards. It's pretty... in a traditional sense and you can't help but be mesmerised by it's prettiness a little. See more..
  37. 5.0 St Joseph's Church (1 review)
    - Good Mass
Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
I attended St Joseph's on a Friday for morning Mass that was held in the nuns' chapel, not the church. Apart from me there was a good attendance of 11, including a young family. The priest was pleasant but being a weekday Mass, there wasn't a homily. The chapel just had sufficient seating for the attendees. The Mass was finished in 21 minutes. I also had a brief look at the Church which (being in regular use on weekends) is well maintained and attractive. It is, like many Catholic Churches, on top of a hill that was easy for me but which some elderly folk may find challenging. It took me 15 minutes from the Junee Motor Inn to walk to church, but I walk at a fairly fast clip. See more..

    - A Peace Memorial

St Ambrose Memorial Anglican Church image
This is a memorial church that is a memorial to the fallen and a thank offering for peace. It is a red brick church on a corner location and quite eye-catching. They built their first church on this site, known as the Church of the Resurrection, opening in March 1903. Due to inadequate foundations and the reactive soil, the church building soon showed structural cracks and by the end of World War I, was in a state of disrepair. The current St Ambrose Anglican Church, Gilgandra was built in 1921 and opened by the Bishop of Bathurst, Dr Long on 26 July 1922. Following the new church opening, the old church was demolished. What is interesting is that after chatting to locals ... this church is also having structural issues and they have concerns about it's future. When you wander around it there are doors leading to nowhere ... I wonder if they were bricked off at some point in the history of the church, because aI feel that the entrances for this church have been altered over its history. There are buildings next door that indicate that because of their proximity that they are also owned by the church. See more..

Campbell, architect from Melbourne to build a new church for £1649. On December 5, 1900 the foundation stone was laid. The church opened in 1901. Cobar Uniting Church image
Cobar is a town full of historic buildings in dusty streets... you can feel the history, but to know what the real story is ... well the stories are fading. Rural communities used to go to church and they became part of the glue that held a community together. The foundation stone records: This stone was laid by - Rev Bernard Deane - July 23rd 1913. The gates of the church are Memorial Gates and as the church has a Church of Honour roll for the war inside, it would be natural if these gates were for the war...but I struggled to read the plaque on the gate. The church is made of red brick and it is on a substantial sized block, but then most buildings in Cobar are. :) See more..
  42. 3.0 St Oliver Plunket Catholic Church (1 review)
    - Public forgiveness

St Oliver Plunket Catholic Church image
Oliver Plunkett was born in Loughcrew, in the midlands of Ireland on November 1, 1625 . At that time in Irish history, Catholics were being persecuted for their faith. Many were evicted from their homes and forbidden to attend Mass. In all of Ireland there was only one active bishop. In 1647 Oliver Plunkett had to go to Rome to study for the priesthood because there were no Colleges or institutions of learning in Ireland. In 1647 Oliver went to study for the priesthood under Jesuit guidance in the Irish College in Rome. Oliver was ordained a priest in Rome in 1654. Due to the religious persecution in Ireland, it was not possible for him to return to minister to his people. Oliver remained in Rome and taught as a professor of Theology at the Propaganda College. Because the persecution of Catholics was at a high point in Ireland Oliver Plunkett could not be ordained Archbishop in Ireland but was ordained in Ghent by Bishop Eugene D’Allmont on 1st December 1669. He was then the Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland. 1n 1673 brought a renewal of religious persecution, and bishops were banned by British government edict. Archbishop Plunkett went into hiding, suffering a great deal from cold and hunger. His many letters showed his determination not to abandon his people, but to remain a faithful shepherd. In 1679 he was arrested and falsely charged with treason. Subsequently he was found guilty of crimes in London and sentenced to death. With deep serenity of soul, Oliver prepared to die, and then publicly forgave all those who were responsible for his death He was executed in London on July 1, 1681. In 1920 he was declared a martyr for the faith and was canonised on 12 October 1975. This church is a pretty, red brick building sitting amidst trees... it was built in 1926...but I could find very little information about it online. For me, the fascination was that I had never heard of Oliver, the namesake. See more..

    Cootamundra Uniting Church image
The Foundation stone was laid by John Wilson McClintock on 10 June 1936. The building is early English Gothic design. The architect for the project was F Purvis of Cootamundra and the successful tenderer for the construction was Frank Mitchell, a local builder and an elder of the Church. The scheme for the new building commenced in reality when the Mackay family, who were early settlers in the Wallendbeen district, donated the material in their wonderful old home “Granite House”. Immediate steps were taken for the demolition of the old home and carting the stone to the site, on land procured from the Dickson estate. Which explains where the stone came from for this beautiful church. The church appears to be still used every Sunday for a service at 09:30. See more..

They rang... I stopped... I listened. Where was the church that had these bells that sing across the town? I was standing next to the water towards looking across the town ... listening. The bells called Oh sinner, heed the tone! “Oh wicked ones, oh wand'ring ones, Oh weary ones, come home.” I went searching for those bells and I found their source. St Josephs... bathed in golden glows of light in the late afternoon. This church built in 1955 held my attention as people milled around the front. The priest on the top of the stairs saying farewell, talking to the parishioners as they left his service. I stood staring up at the red brick bathed in light before going closer to ask if I could step inside. The gentleman was no gentleman as he gruffly said that no-one was stopping me. Taken aback, I smiled wondering where his christian side had gone. I stepped closer, and the priest acknowledged me. I responded quietly and wandered into the church... In 1905 Sir S Mc Caughey gave 3000 guineas to the Presbyterian Centenary Foundation in New South Wales - half of which was to be used to fund the building of this church. Sir Samual laid the foundation stone for it in 1907. In 1908 the church opened with Sir Samual's speech including - " I trust it will be long filled with devout worshippers who will give attentive hearing to the word preached. If so they will be found to be better citizens, better neighbours, better husbands and wives, better fathers and mothers, and at last when their worship and labour have ended they enter into rest and reward promised by our divine master" Sir Samual died in 1919...but who was he? An Irish born pastoralist and philanthropist who had moved to Australia in 1856. Today when you stand before this really lovely church with its steeple... it's a testament to the man who felt he was contributing to his community. See more..

The Anglicans built a wooden church in 1875 but it burnt down in 1876. A parish hall was not built until 1889 and it was then used as a church until the new St George’s was completed in 1927. Interestingly enough the building of this church was commenced in 1926, but because of financial constraints was not completed until 1956. The church is quite prominent which is how I found my way there to look at it ... it's hard to distinguish the different stages of building which indicates how well done the build was. Hard to capture in a photo because of its size, it is impressive and rather elegant. This area of town has several buildings that are well worth stopping to look at... particularly if you like architecture or history. See more..

This is quite stunning to behold, the two buildings side by side... exceptionally well kept which would indicate that they are well used. Foundation stone on the church indicates that "This stone- was laid - by- Rev W G Taylor - President of Conference - Feb 3rd 1897 - Rev W Pearson - Minister." A stone on the hall indicates that "this stone was laid by - Owen J Howard Esq JP - April 17th 1912 - This building was opened by - Mrs H Bowditch - Nov 27th 1912." But what's interesting about the hall is that it is labelled on the front as "methodist school". It's an interesting way to label the Sunday school. When they went to build this church, various tradesmen in the town submitted tenders but RB Keast was successful with a bid of £798. It was the second lowest bid at the time, but it won the most votes. See more..

I noticed this church due to the colors of its edifice. The color was brown colors. The church is attractive. I liked the bell that is separated from the church. There is a shelter at the door to avoid rain. There is parking at the front of the church. See more..

I stopped to look at this pretty church... I took a few photos and then headed to Carrington Park to walk through the gardens... when I finished walking in the park I headed back , took a few photos at the front and started to walk back to my car. I was the ONLY person parked in the street at the time... until an elderly gentleman pulled in behind me as I turned to take one last photo of the church. He walked towards me and asked if I would like a tour of the church. I was stunned, but happy to accept the offer. The church is a mishmash of different eras, once you are inside you can see the different eras. He talked and told me he was a clergyman and then told me about his and then his wife's connection to the church. I was certainly in luck that day to be able to have a private tour. The Foundation stone of this church was laid on 26 May 1907, but then history of the location goes back to the 1860s when a Bark Chapel was located here. See more..

This church is across from Mountford Park... there are a few buildings that are quite stunning in this area of town. It is away from the main street but well worth making a visit to this part of town. This church by most standards is a new build. The Church, Leeton is part of the Parish of Leeton and the Diocese of Riverina. The church was established in 1912 and the first building opened about 1915. The present church building was erected/opened in 1973. The design is like a mix of old and new with an old organ inside that requires regular maintenance. See more..
