  1. 4.5 Old Government House (169 reviews)
    - The oldest public building in Australia (still standing)

    Old Government House image
Old Government House is full of history from Australia's earliest colonial years. Built by convicts, it is the country's oldest public building that is still standing and was the country residence of the first 10 governors of New South Wales, with Gov Lachlan Macquarie probably being the most notable and also spending the most amount of time here. There are some of Macquarie's possession on display in the house including his marital bed. The site is now managed by the National Trust. We took an organised NT tour of the house which was fine - though I must admit at times I had trouble with the Scottish accent of our (very knowledgeable) guide. If you decide not to take a tour there are good information sheets available in each of the rooms. See more..

From the Kiama Harbour Cabins, we took a stroll down to the town centre. We are very impressed by Kiama Municipality for the well maintained township. The whole town street is clean, beautifully decorated with flowers in planter boxes and tourist friendly with free wifi provided by the Town Municipality. The infrastructures such as roads, drains, pedestrian pathways and public amenities are well maintained. There are many choices of cuisines to select from the whole range of restaurants & lots of gift shop along the main street. There are several well preserved historical buildings with write up on its history. A lot of photo opportunities as we love architecture. Kiama is indeed family oriented , very safe and well established comfortable old town!!! See more..

  6. 3.0 Australia Post - Gilgandra LPO (1 review)
    - Long Water Hole

Australia Post - Gilgandra LPO image
The sign on the front says it was established in 1904 and I believe that because they don't make buildings this beautiful anymore. It's almost quaint in it's appearance with round windows and a biscuit-tin kinda look. I could not work out why it was placed as it was on that corner on the angle it was, that was until I located some historical photographs that indicated that there was nothing next to it once. The horses and carts used to pull up to the post office on a gravel looking road. Somewhere between 1904 and 1921 they put curbs in and a roadway. The Cobb&Co service from Gilgandra to Coonamble ended in 1898. Bill Rowley was given this mail run after undercutting their prices. A local hotel used to double as a post office and the gentleman running it earned a salary of 12 pound. This was all prior to this building being put there. See more..
  7. 4.0 Australia Post - Bourke LPO (1 review)
    - Bourke Post and Telegraph Office

Australia Post - Bourke LPO image
Bourke is a remarkable town... filled with rather elegant buildings, of which this post office is but one of them. It was designed by the Colonial Architect's Office under James Barnet and built in 1880 by E. Heseler. Also known as Bourke Post and Telegraph Office. The property is owned by the Keane Family Trust. This post office opened on 22 July 1862, with Joseph Becker appointed as its first postmaster. As the town was a major service centre for the west of NSW and the southwest of Queensland, this post office became one of the busiest and most important post and telegraph offices in the state outside of Sydney. The building is an asymmetrical Victorian Filigree style building of cream painted double brick lower storey and reddish-brown face brick upper storey. See more..

  9. 4.0 Goulburn Court House (1 review)

    Goulburn Court House image
Dropped into Belmore Park to use the conveniences and noted this striking building opposite. The Goulburn Court House was built in 1885-1887 in the Victorian Italianate style and is a superb sandstone building and is well preserved to this day. The Court House is still in use but I prefer not to get too acquainted with the interior? The forecourt is protected by Sydney sandstone columns & gates and adds to the charm of the site. Well worth a look when in town. See more..
