I love Orange. One of my favourites is Lake Canobolas which on a hot day offers two beach areas for swimming. See more..

    - Jindabyne dam is near capacity
    Bodies of Water
    Lake Jindabyne image
Lake Jindabyne which is really a dam is near capacity and the Banjo Paterson park is flooded and worth a look for seats that sit out in the lake now. The Lake is gorgeous when you come from the Thredbo direction. This is one of the more scenic spots in the Snowies. See more..
  4. 4.5 Lake Hume (326 reviews)
    - An epic construction for its time
    Bodies of Water
    Lake Hume image
I am sure many people come, look & leave. Take your time to read the history of this huge facility. Considering how many workers were involved & the work being done by hand you get an appreciation of what was involved to build such a lasting piece of Australian history. When you have also travelled the Murray Darling systems from their tiny starting points to their ends, the whole puzzle fits together as to how epic the entire system is. If only we had more facilities like these today to stop the flooding that occurs. Well worth visiting & taking many photos of. See more..
  5. 4.5 Kiama Harbour (262 reviews)
    - Scenic Kiama Harbour
    Bodies of Water
    Kiama Harbour image
We had parked up by the lighthouse and after looking at the Blowhole decided to walk down around past the ocean pool to the harbour. The harbour is protected by a break wall and it where you find the fishing charter boats and dive boat. There is also the fishing Co Op where you can buy your fresh seafood. A nice walk and very picturesque. See more..
  6. 4.5 Hastings River (191 reviews)
    - Large river mouth
    Bodies of Water
    Hastings River image
The Hastings River dominates the scene around Port Macquarie on which its banks the town was built. My hotel was located very close to the river. From there I walked in one direction towards the Breakwater, the painted rocks and towards the mouth of the river and open sea. In the other direction you have a number of moorings mainly for fishing and tourist sightseeing boats. If I'd had more time there I may have taken a short cruise but it simply wasn't possible and my priority was doing the main coastal coastal walk there which is highly recommended. See more..
  7. 4.5 Tuncurry Rock Pool (167 reviews)
    - Beautiful Turquoise water
    Bodies of Water
    Tuncurry Rock Pool image
Could have stayed here for days just enjoying the water and views. Nine mile beach up along walk way. Dolphins are playful and come into rockpool late afternoon. Easy parking and public toilet near by near Rock Pool Cafe. (important for kids and mums!) The rocks up walkway have beautiful colouring...and the water has a gem like tone that is so lovely. Gets windy but such a beautiful walk up and walk on beach. See more..
  8. 4.5 Lake Ainsworth (137 reviews)
    - Refreshing powers of Tea Tree oil
Spent 2-3 hours Bodies of Water
    Lake Ainsworth image
Whilst in the Byron Bay area we had heard of the Tea Tree lakes and were determined to check them out so after talking to some locals headed off to Lake Ainsworth - there are 2 more local ones the main being on indigenous tribal land near Tallow Bay but that is determined by the indigenous people to be for females only and we didn't want to offend them. On initial arrival you will find plenty of parking as well as plenty of good shade as side of lake and toilets should you need to change. Initial impressions can be bad as the water is a brown colour because of the tea tree oil from the trees surrounding the lake but the lake is warm and the bottom sandy and shallow so safe for families of which there were many visiting. The experience is extremely pleasant and we can out of the lake feeling refreshed and revitalised. A great place to visit. See more..
  9. 4.5 Tumut River (122 reviews)
    - Pioneer Park
    Bodies of Water
    Tumut River image
This huge, green, picturesque park runs along the Tumut River. Early in the morning it is amazing to enjoy the peace while listen to the river running soothingly by, reading a book and listening to the day come to life. You will see bike riders, dog walkers, all friendly and bidding 'good morning', the dogs are everyone's friends, such a warm, welcoming community. Families come with strollers, skates, bikes and balls and to enjoy picnics and the children's playground. See more..

    Lake Menindee image
We were lucky enough to visit when the lake was full. Lovely free camps with plenty of shade not too far off the main road. The road in is unsealed. Was wonderful kayaking around the beautiful flooded gums. You do have to be careful swimming as the water is not clear. This lake is way more attractive than the larger lake Menindee See more..

  13. 4.0 Figure 8 Pools (75 reviews)
    - Brilliant, but come prepared
Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water
    Figure 8 Pools image
Figure Eight Pools is located on a dangerous rock platform in Royal National Park. Before you visit, check the weather, tides and swell (wave size). Only visit during low tide, on a day with low swell. Allow 2 hours for the walk from your car to the rock platform, and 2 hours to return. The 6km walk is steep, slippery and difficult. There are no facilities here; no water, no toilets, no food outlets and no rubbish bins. There's no mobile phone reception either. The Figure Eight Pools rock platform is hazardous and many people have been injured here. Call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency. See more..

Lake Albert is one of Wagga's most popular recreational facilities. It caters for boating, fishing, swimming and other aquatic activities, and is commonly used by walkers, joggers and bike riders. It is family friendly and a must for visitors to Wagga Wagga. Angourie Blue Pool image
This place is so busy in summer, especially on weekends. It is winter here (although today you would not think so) but even though, I was surprised to see no one here. Only a five minute walk from the car park. Visited today to show family. See more..
  18. 4.5 Dunns Swamp (55 reviews)
    - Mini Bungle Bungles
    Bodies of Water
    Dunns Swamp image
The mini Bungle Bungles is my name for the wonderfully striated rock forms. The extreme geology is fascinating, and the walks are strenuous but well worthwhile. I intend to camp there one day! I also intend to join in with the swimmers who looked to be having a fine time while we there. As noted the gravel road is corrugated but quite okay for petite cars. In the meantime staying at Rylstone was fine for a short drive to Ganguddy. The fire damage of Dec 2019/Jan 2020 summer was still very visible in October 20, but the epicormic growth of leaves on burnt trunks is a signal of green hope. My curiousity for this area has increased. I will now read up about its formation and its history. See more..
  19. 4.5 Urunga Wetlands Boardwalk (54 reviews)
    - Beautiful ... even in the gloom
Spent < 1 hour Bodies of Water
    Urunga Wetlands Boardwalk image
Walked around the Urunga Wetlands twice during a recent stay. Once on a fine, sunny morning and once after rain with more rain threatening. Even in the gloom, I found it a wonderful, uplifting experience. The track is a circuit of about 600 m and is entirely on flat terrain, on boardwalks and bitumen pathways. Boardwalks take you through atmospheric, swampy stands of Paperbark trees and across a small and very pretty lake, festooned with water lilies. It is beautiful spot. The story on how this site was rehabilitated from not long ago being a treatment plant for toxic metals like antimony was also interesting. Must have cost a bomb, though! It is also very quiet - just saw one other walker during our visits. See more..
  20. 4.5 Bendeela Camping and Picnic Area (51 reviews)
    - Brilliant - but plan to go out of peak times
Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water • National Parks • Nature & Wildlife Areas
Bendeela Camping and Picnic Area image
A wonderful, low-priced, camp ground with lots of green space: however, at peak times it would be hectic and crowded. Amenities are good, there are garbage bins, the waterside location excellent. A booking is required: easily done online and the only fee is the modest booking fee itself. The main attraction here though - at least for us - are the wombats. Of an evening many can be sighted and they roam freely, undeterred by campers. Quite a thrill to have one wander past us at our camp table and through our camp site. See more..
  21. 4.5 Clarence River (47 reviews)
    - Beautiful spot to sit and watch the river flow past.
Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water

We also took a trip to nearby Brooms Head. It is a pretty spot. We used to camp there many years ago, when our children were young. The lagoon there is a wonderful and safe place for the kids to go exploring. See more..
  22. 4.0 Lake Wyangan (45 reviews)
    - Great Place to Stay
    Bodies of Water
    Lake Wyangan image
We had been in town at a caravan park to catch up with power, washing etc and the lady at the information centre told us we could stay out at Lake Wyangan for 3 nights. The toilets are spotless with water, soap and paper towel and the views over the lake are lovely. We dropped our van off at the lake in the morning and went out bush walking to Cocopurra National Park. We also were able to drive around town and go to the supermarket without the hassle of towing the van. Lovely quiet spot with only a few other travellers. See more..
  23. 4.0 Molonglo Gorge (44 reviews)
    - energetic walk with great views
    Bodies of Water • Parks
    Molonglo Gorge image
The start of the walk involves a bit of clambering over rocks, but it gets a bit easier from there. The track is narrow and there are lots of roots, rock and shale along the way, with intermittent railings and areas without any rails at all. I would recommend a stick if your balance is at all dodgy. The walk requires a bit of stamina as it is longer than anticipated. The signage at the beginning says it is about 6.5kms return - according to our Fitbits it was a bit over 4km one way, and took us about an hour and a half each way, but well worth the effort. Of course, if you are young and fit, it won't take nearly as long. Nice picnic area at the end, so take water and picnic along to fuel the return juirney. See more..
  24. 4.5 Cranky Rock Nature Reserve (41 reviews)
    - A must-see brimful of nature
Spent 2-3 hours Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks • Geologic Formations
    Cranky Rock Nature Reserve image
This nature reserve was absolutely lovely, especially given that Warialda and districyt has enjoyed a huge amount of rain during Spring 2021. The tables and chairs are well maintained by the caretakers as were the toilets. The walk is an easy one whether over the suspension bridge and down to the 'beach' or up to the lookout. The huge boulders are magnificent. Photos don't really do them justice. Much birdlife and many butterfiles plus dragonflies evident. It was warm enough to swim but due to limited time at the attraction I did not. The horse that insisted on eating one of our tour participant's lunch had no doubt done this many times before. We all laughed. See more..
  25. 4.5 Kianinny Bay (41 reviews)
    - Friendly Stingrays
    Bodies of Water
    Kianinny Bay image
Stopped by Kianinny Bay while in Tathra. This is a pleasant spot to swim or launch your boat, or have a picnic. There is a large area for fishermen to also clean their catch with the left overs being picked up by a variety of birds and sea life, including large stingrays. There must have been about 6 stingrays. Some of who came right up to the edge to grab a fish head and allow people to stoke them. See more..
  26. 4.5 Lake Mungo (39 reviews)
    - Do the walking tour!
    Bodies of Water
    Lake Mungo image
If you’re going to visit Lake Mungo make sure you do the Walls of China Walking Tour run by the Traditional Owners. It was by far the highlight out our visit. Our guide Tanya was fantastic, and with her expertise we were able to understand and see up close this amazing place. Without the walking tour I think we would have found lake Mungo underwhelming. The tour can be booked on the National Park website. See more..
  27. 4.5 Lighthouse Beach (39 reviews)
    - Huge beach
Spent 2-3 hours Bodies of Water • Beaches
    Lighthouse Beach image
Lighthouse Beach is located below Tacking Point Lighthouse approximately 7kms from Port Macquarie. The 9km long elongated beach is a favourite local beach due to its protection from the north easterly winds. The beach is patrolled through the summer months with a surf club and kiosk available. 28. 5.0 Waring Gardens (36 reviews)
    - Landscaped
Spent 2-3 hours Bodies of Water • Parks • Gardens
    Waring Gardens image
This is an old-fashioned Central Park, it is exceptionally beautiful. It has established trees, walking path, fountains, ponds, historic buildings, war memorials and beautiful landscape gardens. This is a special place that in times gone by, romantic interludes would’ve taken place. It’s a place that will bring out your poetic side, your romantic side… Let you be at peace. See more..
  29. 4.5 Mount Ettalong Lookout (33 reviews)
    - Lovely Return Visit
Spent 1-2 hours Bodies of Water • Lookouts
    Mount Ettalong Lookout image
It was 5 years since we last walked out to the lookout. Such an easy and beautiful walk through the gnarled Sydney Red Gums. The views over Lion Island, Pearl Beach and the entrance to the Hawkesbury are stunning. If you venture out to the rock outcrops overlooking the south take care as it is a very long way down. The big lookout at the end was closed as the ramp had deteriorated which was a bit disappointing. See more..
  30. 4.0 Lake George (33 reviews)
    - It is a real body of water once more
    Bodies of Water
    Lake George image
I drive a lot between Sydney and Canberra and Lake George has a been not much more than a pitiful puddle for many years, that's if it contained any water at all. Drove to/from Canberra in late January 2023 and it was a real lake, nearly lapping at the Federal Highway and water as far as you could see. Not quite at the level it was in the late 80s, early 90s when it really was lapping at the side of the highway (as I recall), but very impressive, all the same. Lots of birdlife, too. Just from the one stop we saw a pair of black swans, seagulls and a white-faced heron. See more..
  31. 4.5 Lake Centenary (29 reviews)
    - Tranquilllity plus
    Bodies of Water
    Lake Centenary image
My son was anxious to see Lake Centenary; we had only just become aware of it due to signs in Temora. It is only a couple of Km out of town and well worth a visit. If you are in the mood for walking, there is a long track around the Lake and the combination of the lake, beautiful trees and a light breeze was soothing. See more..
  32. 4.5 Shelly Beach (27 reviews)
    - Ocean, rocks, sculptures
Spent 1-2 hours Bodies of Water • Beaches
    Shelly Beach image
We accidentally found Shelly Beach as we headed to the Sea Acres Rainforest Center. Taking a wrong turn, we luckily ended up on this lovely beach that is part of the Coastal Walk. The wooden statue of the artist Harry Thompson, sculpted by Stephen King, immediately caught my eyes when we visited this beach. We later found that the artist’s wooden sculptures adorn the city in several places. We could enjoy a rare sunny afternoon. Among the many rainy days, there was finally a long-coveted refreshment walk on the beach. We weren’t the only visitors since the sunshine and the waves running on the sandy shore attracted many bathers to the deservedly popular Shelly Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches surrounding Port Macquarie. 33. 4.5 Gum Bend Lake (26 reviews)
    - Wonderful Camping Spot
    Bodies of Water
    Gum Bend Lake image
Just 4 km out from Condobolin, Gum Bend Lake is a fabulous free camping spot. When we were here a number of years ago the lake was full and there were boats out fishing . We were so stunned when we arrived this time that there was only a very small area with water. There is a live walk around the lake and you can stay for up to 14 days. There are gas bbqs and a fabulous covered kid’s playground. The best thing about the spot is that the nice and clean amenities not only have toilets but hot showers. There is a spot to make a donation to help maintain the facility which you don’t mind. See more..

    Rangoon Reserve image
We had never been to the township of Minnamurra so decided to take a look. Rangoon Reserve was a wonderful spot beside the very pretty estuary. There was plenty of parking, a wonderful beach, boat ramp, kids playground, picnic facilities and an amenities block. Being nice calm water meant that little kids right through to those in their senior years were enjoying the water. Also a great place for paddle boarding, kayaking and fishing. The coastal walk also runs through here so we went for a bit of a walk up the next headland which was very scenic. See more..

    Lake Eucumbene image
Lake Eucumbene in the beautiful Snowy Mountains is located around 40 kilometres from Cooma at its closest point. It sits at an elevation of 1200 metres above sea level making it a pristine alpine lake. The closest town to Lake Eucumbene is Adaminaby. The dam construction was finished in 1958 creating the largest of the Snowy Scheme lakes. It holds around nine times the volume of water that Sydney Harbour does. This lake is one of the best fisheries in the Australian Highlands holding rainbow trout, brown trout and atlantic salmon, the lake is regularly re-stocked with trout by NSW Fisheries which makes it a mecca for trout fishermen. In the summer months there is a wide spectrum of sporting, freshwater fishing and tourist activities that are available all year round in the Snowy Mountains region of the Mount Kosciusko National Park. Tiger Bay Wetlands image
I'm not sure what is more delightful: the wetlands themselves or the fact they were set up by the local council and in 2011, were doubled in size! This is a thoughtful piece of environmental conservation that should be rewarded by tourist attendance. The walks go beside a large lagoon with stranded, former eucalypts standing sentinel and offering homes, hiding places and observation posts. They also include a few small water spaces with hides placed appropriately. We easily completed the walk in an hour with lots of stops to observe birds and numerous examples of canoe trees. A really lovely spot deserving of more patronage. See more..
  48. 3.0 Umberumberka Reservoir (10 reviews)
    - What happened to Umberumberka?
    Bodies of Water
    Umberumberka Reservoir image
Let's turn time back... it's 1911 and this reservoir is being built... it's going to take three years to finish this build. The locals in Silverton and Broken Hill need water ... something has to be done. It's going to take a lot of men to complete this project... 500 were working on the reservoir ... around the area a settlement springs up... Umberumberka ... a school is needed... homes are built. A small town exists... a town that will continue to exist for decades. The sand of time shifts and now it's 2019... the Reservoir is still operating, but the town is long gone... you can see remnants of what once was. And if you head back into Silverton, you will see photos of the citizens of Umberumberka... but time moves on and we lose parts of our history. Now there are goats wandering around, there is a fenced off BBQ area and there are wild quandong trees growing. This area gives us an idea of what was done by our pioneers and as such... it's interesting to have a look. See more..
