Hard to believe that trains and other transport used this bridge! It's on the flood plain... can you believe that the first Gundagai town was built here, despite the advice from the Indigenous people at the time. Look up the story of "Yarri". You will not be disappointed! See more..

  11. 4.0 Murrumbidgee River Bridge (1 review)
    - Carrathool Bridge over Murrumbidgee River
    Spent < 1 hour Bridges
    Murrumbidgee River Bridge image
In October 2019 this bridge was replaced by another one, it is now heritage listed. The bridge spanning the Murrumbidgee River between Carrathool and the Sturt Highway was completed in 1924. It is an Allan-type timber truss road bridge. It has a bascule-type lift span supported on cylindrical iron piers, designed to allow river-craft to pass. Only three bascule lift span bridges remain in NSW, and the Carrathool bridge is the only one of these in a timber truss road bridge. It replaced a punt in 1924 ... so this bridge was 95 when it retired. Fortunately it has been retained so that tourists can stop to look... there is not a lot of signage at the site, but it's quite a beautiful piece to stop and appreciate. See more..
  12. 4.0 Darlington Point Bridge (1 review)
    - Bascule Bridge

    Darlington Point Bridge image
I have to admit I found this fascinating... this is my second trip to Darlington Point, it just appears to be a sleepy little town. When I was heading towards Griffith I noticed this bridge and turned around to go back to the site to explore. The sign tells us that the towers were part of the Bascule Bridge which was an important crossing for the Murrumbidgee River. It was adapted from an American design by the Public Works Department by Harvey Dare. Who WAS Harvey? Henry Harvey Dare was born at Goulburn in 1867. He was educated at Burwood Public School and Sydney Grammar School. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 1888 and took a master's degree from the same institution in 1894, winning gold medals each occasion, the first to obtain this double distinction. After working at the Sydney Observatory, he was appointed to the drawing office of the Roads and Bridges Branch of the Public Works Department in 1888 and from 1891 to 1893 worked as a Bridge Computer, checking calculations and specifications in bridge designs and tenders, including the early concepts for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Dare was placed in charge of the Department’s Engineering Drawing Office when the separate branch offices were amalgamated. Anyway, back to the bridge... This bridge operated in a working condition from 1905 to 1979. That's quite a stint for a bridge. It was placed at this site near the caravan park in 1989. See more..

  14. 5.0 Tocumwal Railway Bridge (1 review)
    - Oldest existing lift bridge over the River Murray
    Bridges
    Tocumwal Railway Bridge image
The Murray River road and railway bridge is a heritage-listed railway and former road bridge that carries the Tocumwal railway line across the Murray River at Tocumwal. The Truss lift span bridge over the Murray River opened in 1895, and was constructed by the NSW Public Works Department. It has three spans, the centre span having an opening lift-span for navigation. Initially provided for road traffic only, it was strengthened for rail traffic in 1908, and was used for both road and rail traffic until November 1987. There is a certain fascination for any bridge that is built to stand the test of time and this one offers amazing views of the river... if you are there are the right time, you can get amazing photos of sunsets or sunrises... but regardless of the time of day you visit there is something uniquely beautiful about a bridge that is built to stand the test of time. Visited on Saturday 5th November. The Grafton Bridge opened on 19 July 1932 and is a heritage-listed bascule truss bridge that carries the road traffic and North Coast railway line across the Clarence River in Grafton. The bascule span was operational from its opening in 1932 until 1969. The bridge links the Grafton central business district with South Grafton. A parallel New Grafton Bridge located 70 metres east of the original bridge opened to traffic in 2019. Well worth going to check out. See more..
