  1. 4.5 Lightning Ridge (238 reviews)
    - Fell in Love with Lightning Ridge
Spent More than 3 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Mines

Lightning Ridge was not part of our original itinerary but so glad we decided to add it. We absolutely loved the place and the longer we stayed, the more we liked it. The people were wonderful too. We stayed at the Opal Caravan Park, which we highly recommend and did all our shopping at Khan's IGA, which among everything we bought, Khan's eye fillet was the absolute BEST we've ever tasted. It cooked up perfectly and just melted in the mouth. It was so good, we went back and bought more. Will certainly revisit Lightning Ridge and do all the things we didn't get time to do. See more..

Short walk from carpark is main platform looking out to mine. There are other hikes but this was quickest. The view was great. We didn’t linger as there were big blood sucking mosquitoes everywhere so bring your bug spray. See more..

    Montreal Goldfield image
I thoroughly enjoyed Montreal Goldfield, the entire site is run by volunteers who do an amazing job conserving the unique history of one of only two Southern Hemisphere beach side gold finds. Learn about the rectangular shape of the pits, the mystery that gave Mystery Bay its name, methods of mining, the geology that led to gold being deposited and if you are lucky you may get to try dowsing! Take cash with you to pay the entry which goes toward maintaining the site. It was only $7 when I was there in 2021. If you are in the Bermagui area then it is well worth stopping in. See more..

    Junction Mine image
As you come into Broken Hill from the South the old Junction Mine looms up on the right. It's one of the oldest mines in the district and started in early 1885 and was a claim on the 'Line of Load' and extracted chlorides of silver over many years with varying success. It passed through several owners and finally closed in 1972. The main shaft (Brownes) and other remnants remain today to remind us of the Hill's past and gives a good view from the top as well.. To get to Valentines Mine, follow the Mudgee-Hill End Rd for around 5km from Hill End Historic Site and turn off onto Ullamulla Rd where sign directs you to Valentines mine historic site, about 500m along 2WD rutted dirt road. Whilst not a lot to see, the machinery and several inaccessible vertical mine shafts and slag heaps are interesting. They are some of the oldest mining remnants in Australia. No entry fee and easily combined with Cornish Quartz Roasting Pits accessed from the same turn off. See more..
