We visited this historical mansion today. Apart from it being a most beautiful and amazingly different building, it houses so many items collected over many years by several generations of the Morgan family. There is a huge collection of antique and period furniture. The proportions of some of these pieces is incredible. The current owners, this generation of the Morgan family, live in this amazing home and continue the restoration of work to keep the building in good order. It is so generous of them to allow visitors through their home on a daily basis, to enjoy the incredible history of their home. Funds raised through a very moderate viewing charge, and weddings and community functions help in the costs of the restoration project. See more..

It is a a magnificent tribute to the servicemen and women of the region. There are information boards about each of the 'models' on the art. Matt Last (Adnate) is one of street art's most influential big wall painters. The second artist for this work was Bill Campbell but I can't find information about him... whereas Adnate is well known to anyone who follows the Silo Art Trail. This station is a heritage-listed former railway station on the Blayney-Demondrille line. It is a type 4 station building, built in the standard roadside design, that was built in 1886-87. The brick platform face, the station gates, and the station setting, including the forecourt, cutting, and station planting, are all part of the heritage listing. But the most magic feature and why you simply must put this on your list? The views!!! This is on a hill overlooking the town. We were lucky and were attended by Gwen who gave us fascinating background to the hardwood slab cottage from 1889 which had been moved from another location and was left just as it was originally including newspaper wallpaper (updated due to the old papers falling off over time. The block of land this sits on purchased from George Sackett ... it sold for £125, towards which the Sackett family donated £50. In August tenders were invited for the erection of a brick building for the Soldier's Memorial Hall. Successful tender was by Frank Mitchell, Cootamundra .. the cost of the building was £1225. The foundation stone was laid by Mayor LP Forsyth on November 30th, 1921. Also in 1921 a time capsule containing copies of the Cootamundra and Sydney Morning Heralds and a list of the Hall Committee was cemented within the stone in 1921. On April 25th in 1922 the hall was dedicated by having a ANZAC Day united service, the very first for Wallendbeen. The official opening was the following evening, it was opened with a 'gold key' by Mayor George Sackett prior to a Fancy Dress Ball being held. This town only has about 300 residents so having a hall is important to a small community. Worth stopping at if you enjoy old buildings or history. See more..
  19. 3.0 Murrumbidgee Shire Hall (1 review)
    - Grand Opening

    Murrumbidgee Shire Hall image
From the correspondence from the shire before the hall was built - 14 October 1921 Tenders The following tenders were received for the erection of a Hall at Darlington Point. W S Baker & Sons .........................£1,720 T G Taylor ......................................£1,700 A Hewitt .........................................£1,635 and Haynes and Dixon .........................£1,634 President Lander moved that the Council vote the sum of £1,634 for the erection of a Hall in Darlington Point and the tender of Messrs Haynes and Dixon at that price be accepted. Seconded by Cr Ross. So it seems that the tender was won by a mere pound to have this built! And on the 10th March in 1922 - Cr White moved that the two marble tablets be erected in the recesses in the front wall of the Hall, with the names of President Lander, President Ross and the Shire Clerk Mr Conolly on one and the Architect Mr J S Robertson and the Contractors Messrs Haynes & Dixon on the other. Seconded by Cr Campbell. So it seems that the decision to have these plaques was made 100 years ago. On the 5th June 1922 it was decided that they would have a Hall opening at 6.30pm to be followed by a concert at 8pm and a ball at 10.30pm. To attend the hall opening the costs were set as - Concert only 2/6, Concert and Supper 5/-, Ball and Supper per Gentlemen 7/6 and Ladies 5/-, Concert, Ball and Supper Gentlemen 10/-, Ladies 7/6, Children under 14 years of age half price. So what you will see now is a building that has stood the testament of time... it's attractive and austere and over 100 years old. See more..

    Court House image
This court house is quite attractive on the Main Street and proudly acknowledges that it has got old! In fact- it's 140 years old! Humans do the same I think... we celebrate our birthdays when we are quite young as an introduction to the world around us ... and then it falls by the wayside until we are old and then it's exciting to be turning 80,90 or 100. :) The first Court of Petty Sessions was held on 16 May 1877 in town. Over the next three years, a design was prepared and tenders put out for the construction of the court house awarded to Bathurst builder, William Ralston. This Victorian Free Classical and Italianate style building features a hipped roof and symmetrical facade with a triple- arched arcaded entrance, and paired round-arched windows. Originally, a coat of arms was located above the central arch. A disused cell block is at the rear. See more..

    Post Office image
In 1861 the sudden growth of the a settlement on the Lachlan Goldfield led to an unofficial mail service known as Black Ridge Post Office. By December of the same year, the town was given the name of Forbes. The official post office was then set up. The location of the post office shifted until in 1863 they had a wooden building on this site. This present building was opened in 1881, which expressed confidence in the town's long term future as it was a substantive building. In 1885 the town clock was erected in the tower. Forbes Post Office was featured in a set of stamps in 1982 to illustrate historic Australian Post Offices. And it was also the year where the mechanism for the clock so that it became electric rather than manual. See more..

Spent < 1 hour Architectural Buildings
    Court House image
This Courthouse was designed by colonial government architect Walter Vernon. It was built in 1896. Like many courthouses it has a clerestory window in the roof to let in light. Colonel Walter Vernon was an English architect who migrated to Australia and pursued his career as an architect in Sydney. In his role as the New South Wales Government Architect he is noted for designing multiple government buildings, many of which are extant with listings on national and state heritage registers. Vernon favoured what were later known as the Federation styles, such as the Free Classical, Arts and Crafts, and Free Style. This part of town has several stunning buildings- this is just one of many...but it is an exceptionally beautiful building with wonderful lines. Arches into the entry area... it is quite magnificent. That it is still being used as a court house is a testament to how well it was built. See more..
  23. 5.0 Town Hall (1 review)
    - Everard Christopher Powderly
Spent < 1 hour Architectural Buildings
    Town Hall image
You cannot help but be awed by the Town Hall in Young! It's an impressive building! It was built in 1875. In 1922 the Soldiers War Memorial Clock tower was added. If we are talking history, in 1889 Young was the first town in Australia to install electricity into the streets and homes of the township; Tamworth NSW had installed electricity to the streets only the previous year. But let's return to the Hall. Look up and you will see that the tower features a clock face at the top and a bronze statue of a Digger, located on the street-side of the tower at roof level. There are several polished granite tablets on the outside of the main doorway beneath and inside the entrance foyer on which inscriptions and veterans' names from the First and Second World Wars are engraved. The contract to build this was given to A.G.Brown of Sydney in 1922 at a cost of £3362 with an additional cost of £3000 for the tablets and clock. The foundation stone was laid by Sir George Fuller, Premier of NSW on the 4th November, 1922. The Effigy of the Australian Soldier was suggested by the Steel Caldwell family. Anthony Caldwell was killed in an aircraft in England whilst training to be a pilot in the Flying Corps. In order to commemorate Anthony and all of those locals that served in the war, his family commissioned and financed the statue at a cost of £330. The model for the soldier was Everard Christopher Powderly who served as a Corporal and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery. He was chosen to retain a family connection as the men's mothers were sisters. See more..

  25. 5.0 Hay Court House (1 review)
    - An icon in Australian legal history
Spent < 1 hour Architectural Buildings
    Hay Court House image
Jaw-dropping beautiful court house.. .it's hard to reconcile that this is actually a court house with it's beautiful manor look. Going back 100 years, the 1917 records show that the Hay-based magistrate dealt with everything from the Vagrancy Act and the Drunkards Punishment Provisions of the Police Offences Act, as well as granting licenses for auctioneers, hawkers, and second-hand dealers. This courthouse is the fourth to be built in Hay. Hay’s first courthouse of 1860 was on the site of the present Hay Post Office, built within only a year of Hay being Gazetted as a town in 1859. By 1874 the building was becoming dilapidated, with plaster falling on a judge’s head on one occasion, bricks tumbling from the sides of the door, and it was too small to cope with its ever increasing work load. The second courthouse, opened in 1877, is now the building occupied by the Hay Shire Chambers. However, like its predecessor it too was declared unsatisfactory after a short time, and in 1855 the third court house moved to the Athenaeum building in Moppett Street. In 1892 the fourth and final courthouse was completed. The Court featured in the Shearers Strike of August 1894 following a number of incidents at the Hay Railway Station. The local magistrate thought it wise to swear in 97 special constables to assist police in the event of a riot, one that thankfully that never eventuated. There should be no surprise that it is classified by the National Trust. See more..

    Court House image
Though restrained in scale and materials, Leeton Courthouse is one of the finest examples of interwar courthouses in New South Wales. This period is characterised by modest public buildings that demonstrate the more inclusive, civic approach to governing and the administration of justice adopted by the NSW Government in the early twentieth century. The building is an outstanding example of courthouses designed by McRae. Leeton Courthouse has been associated with the provision of law and justice in the town since 1924 and is associated with the establishment and development of the town of Leeton, the first of the towns planned to house the workers and administrators of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. It is located across from Mountford Park... there are churches on both sides of this intersection...so if you like interesting buildings then you should head here. See more..

    Court House image
The building's design was attributed to George Oakeshott, an employee of New South Wales Government Architect Walter Liberty Vernon and was built by J. Douglas of Orange. George John Oakeshott was born in 1860 or 1861 and served his articles under William Young in London, remaining as improver for a year-and-a-half and studying at the South Kensington Schools and at the Architectural Association. He emigrated to Australia where he entered State Service, subsequently entering Federal Service as Works Director in 1903. Colonel Walter Liberty Vernon VD FRIBA (11 August 1846 – 17 January 1914) was an English architect who migrated to Australia and pursued his career as an architect in Sydney, New South Wales. In his role as the New South Wales Government Architect he is noted for designing multiple government buildings, many of which are extant with listings on national and state heritage registers. The present-day Bourke Court House is the third in the town. It was constructed during the period 1897-1900 and cost £9,596. And what a design... you can't help but be impressed by this building. It truly is quite stunning. Located on the opposing corner from the police station ... it is quite austere and beautiful to look at. See more..

    Historic Westpac Bank Building image
Originally this was the AJS bank- The Australian Join Stock Bank. It was the first bank to establish in Hay, in rented quarters beside Moss' store. In 1872 weatherboard premises were built on a site north of this building. The present Westpac Banking Corporation building was erected by the Witcombe Bros. The architect was Benjamin Backhouse of Sydney. Benjamin Backhouse (1829 – 29 July 1904) was an architect and politician in Australia. He was a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. Construction began in 1877 and the bank moved into the new premises in 1878. In 1910 the AJS Bank became the Australian Bank of Commerce ( ABC). This building became the Westpac in 1982. It's an attractive building... there is something austere about old banks. It's in good condition and is currently used as a bank. See more..

    Former London Chartered Bank image
This London Chartered bank first opened in premises across the road from this one in 1881, a fire destroyed the building. The bank then purchased the vacant lot, paying a record price of £40 per foot for the 55 foot frontage. J.P.Markey of Hawthorn, Melbourne built the premises. The architects were Oakden, Addison and Kemp and the cost of the building was over £7000! Oakden, Addison and Kemp was an architectural firm in Melbourne. While it was short lived, existing from only 1887 to 1892, they designed a number of outstanding projects, and all three members designed many more notable projects in earlier and later partnerships. The bank closed its doors in 1893, resuming later that year as the London Bank of Australia...which later became the English Scottish and Australian Banking Co. They left Hay in 1942 and the building was taken over by Goldsborough Mort. It is a commanding building looking at it on the street... quite austere and formal. See more..

The divisional engineers office, the station masters residence, the goods shed and the station building were completed in 1876. A unique thing from those times was that the stationmaster was supplied with a grandiose residence. The buildings around the current station all relate to that period.
