It is a real body of water once more

I drive a lot between Sydney and Canberra and Lake George has a been not much more than a pitiful puddle for many years, that's if it contained any water at all. Drove to/from Canberra in late January 2023 and it was a real lake, nearly lapping at the Federal Highway and water as far as you could see. Not quite at the level it was in the late 80s, early 90s when it really was lapping at the side of the highway (as I recall), but very impressive, all the same. Lots of birdlife, too. Just from the one stop we saw a pair of black swans, seagulls and a white-faced heron.

By George!! There's water in the Lake!
Over the past 40 odd years of periodically driving to Canberra I have hardly seen any water in Lake George, which is a huge, flat, shallow body of water (sometimes) some 25 kilometres long and 10 kilometres wide. It is termed an endorheic lake as it has no outflow of water to oceans or rivers. Any water that forms in it seems to gradually seep into the sediment or evaporate over time. However, given the consistent heavy rains in NSW since the start of the year, the Lake currently has a very high volume of water in it. We had a great view from the Weereewa Lookout which is on the Federal Highway.

What - it’s got water in it!
We were starting to think where will we stop for our picnic lunch as we approached Lake George on our drive south from Sydney. Then we saw water, lots of water so we made the decision to stop & have lunch at the car park picnic ground. In my 30 years driving Sydney Melbourne I’ve never seen Lake George with so much water.
