Urunga Wetlands Boardwalk, New South Wales, Australia

Beautiful ... even in the gloom
Walked around the Urunga Wetlands twice during a recent stay. Once on a fine, sunny morning and once after rain with more rain threatening. Even in the gloom, I found it a wonderful, uplifting experience. The track is a circuit of about 600 m and is entirely on flat terrain, on boardwalks and bitumen pathways. Boardwalks take you through atmospheric, swampy stands of Paperbark trees and across a small and very pretty lake, festooned with water lilies. It is beautiful spot. The story on how this site was rehabilitated from not long ago being a treatment plant for toxic metals like antimony was also interesting. Must have cost a bomb, though! It is also very quiet - just saw one other walker during our visits.

Wetlands boardwalk is 1.6km from older Urunga boardwalk near ocean
I’m looking at the other reviews and have realised that those reviews are all for the long boardwalk that goes from the caravan park out to the ocean. Not for this new boardwalk. THIS boardwalk is much newer and completely different. It’s about 1.6km from the caravan park and was redeveloped by the state government to replace an old Antinomy processing plant in the area. The whole area has been rehabilitated and turned into a beautiful wetland area for wildlife. The shorter 600m boardwalk is stunning. Much wider than the old boardwalk at the ocean, this one caters for wheelchairs. I saw one black swan while I was there in the middle of the day so I’d recommend late afternoon or early mornings is you want to see more bird life. It’s free!

A good walk on a dry day
Entered via a caravan park and has plenty of parking. An excellent walk and if you look over the edge the water is so clear you can see the fish in the water. The broadwalk can we busy but it is still worth a visit for the views, the fish and possibly even the pelican that we saw. No shelter from the sun.
