Tenterfield Railway Museum, New South Wales, Australia

4.5 (235 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Tenterfield Speciality Museums

Railway History

The family spent a couple of hours here, it was very informative and brought back memories of the older style trains used when I was a kid. The Museum is run by volunteers and its a credit to them. Well worth a visit.

Magnificently cared for with plenty of very historic rolling stock.
The Station Building alone is truly worth the visit with the rooms beautifully dressed with appropriate furnishings. The locos & carriages were a real treat for me, an avid train buff, & most people would not leave without spending at least an hour admiring all the items spread out & inviting you to roam through them & get a real feel for train travel of the past. Congrats to the Volunteers ... well done!

Great place to learn the history of railway in the local area
The museum is housed in the old railway station at Tenterfield. It's an amazing place to visit, being actively looked after by volunteers! When we visited, there were a number of volunteers restoring old wagons, and generally looking after the place. The museum is a step back in time to see how the railway line played a key role in the establishment in the area. There are a lot of hands on exhibits (especially in the "trikes" shed which the kids loved), and you can also walk into most of the carriages that were there. A good history lesson for both kids and adults! There are sections of old photos showing what life would've been like in the railway yards, and as a station master. It's definitely a place I would come back to, when next in Tenterfield.
