Devonian fishes. Glad I wasn't swimming with them....

Inside of museum has displays of fossils found near the road outside Canowindra. Site of a big "fish kill" that occurred in the Devonian period. They have computer simulations of the fish showing what they looked like swimming which are pretty interesting, along with the story of how the fossils were found and where they sit in an historical context. Outside there is a time line which you can walk around showing what was on Earth and where the various continents were at that time. There is sort of snakes and ladders timeline game for the kids. Kids can fossick in a sand pit, find a red rock and present it at the front desk for a shark's tooth fossil. Also a gift shop with teatowels etc. Nicely laid out and worth a visit. I also recommend strolling down the main street (which is full of country town architecture, including an almost unchanged 1950's style cafe) and visiting the great second hand bookshop that is there.

    How amazing, world class fossils!
Little Canowindra's world class fossils, so close you can even touch them. 360-370 million year old fossils so special that even David Attenborough has traveled there to see them. It's only a little museum but you come out understanding what you're looking at and how special this fossil find is and all for $10 an adult (pensioners$8).

    World class Devonian fossils
This was a fossil find in 1956 discovered accidentally by a road worker. The fossils are of the late Devonian period (Age Of Fishes) some of these fish fossils display attributes that prepares them to walk out of water onto dry land for the first time. This is evidence of the first start of life on land 360-365 million years ago, thus ending the Devonian Period. Palaeontologists from around the world study these unique fossils. Sir David Attenborough is one of the museum’s many global fans. Someone commented on this site that it’s a strange place for such a museum! No it isn’t, this is where the event happened all those millions of years ago. MUST SEE.
