McCrossin's Mill Museum, New South Wales, Australia

4.5 (76 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Uralla Speciality Museums

A surprisingly great find! Worth a stop (and cafe 53 over the road was pretty good too)

Many country town museums have a selection of old rusty farming equipment and some photos, this place is not the usual. We stopped for a brief look and ended up staying for over an hour going through the museum. The entry way has a series of large paintings telling the story of Captain Thunderbolt's death, it is worth the time to read the captions as they story provides context for other items in the museum. The rest of the display is an interesting mix of items relating to Thunderbolt, personal war history of residents, other notable Tenterfield people, and some great samples of old fire engines, buggies, unusual farming equipment (not rusty saws). The building itself was an old mill and is quite interesting, there is a lovely garden too. At $15 for a family it was good value.

    Very Good Museum
This is a truly great museum. The staff member we met was very friendly. The museum is a sensitive take on Australian history, both good and bad. This is mixed with some humour. We have visited a lot of local museums and this is one of the best.

    Well worth a visit...
This museum has some excellent artefacts and memorabilia from early settlement pioneer days and excellent historical notes from Captain Thunderbolt era. The entry area has 7 amazing paintings that depict the events of Captain Thunderbolts and his final days... highly recommended.
