For just a gold coin donation you can spend as little or as much time as you like wandering around the old Cowra Railway yards which is home for the Lachlan Valley Railway Society. I nice gentleman opened up the olden day passenger railway carriages for us to look at. It brought back so many memories of travelling on these in my youth. There’s the fabulous turntable which is huge and at the end of each track sits a range of both steam and diesel engines. There is enough work to keep these dedicated volunteers going for years and years. So glad they are keep our railway history alive.

Brilliant place to visit, highly recommend it.
Awesome visit and fortunate enough to have a guided tour by volunteer Hayden. His knowledge was fantastic and the exhibits incredible. The history was fascinating and to visit with my father who is 80 and had his own great memories and stories of many of the old trains was great. They have some steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, some restored carriages from various eras, and lots of photos and information. Absolutely worth a visit. The visit is by donation and we recommend be generous, the history is worth preserving and the volunteers amazing.

Suggest weekend visit
While some may see this as a junkyard, I see it as an opportunity to see a lot of rail history in one place. Run by volunteer enthusiasts trying to retain historical pieces for this and future generations, their job here will never be complete. There just isn't enough people or money available. Probably best to visit at wekends when there is more liklihood of volunteers being available, and having time, to show you around. Very few of the rolling stock can be entered or climbed upon, and information panels are in short supply, but the whole place has generations of recollections of railways in NSW. For a small donation, on the edge of town, is worth a visit.
