4.0Bastrop State Park(219 reviews) - Biannual camping with friends Monday: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM State Parks
A Large portion of the Bastrop State Park was destroyed by a devasting fire in September of 2011. The community along with the State and other organizations have been replanting the trees. Although it doesn't possess the same beauty it offers an interesting perspective in how a forest is regrown. There are still a number of areas that were not burned that you can see as well as a number of the Historic buildings. This park is listed in the National Historic Registry. There is RV and tent camping available. Bastrop State Park is located next to Buescher State Park and suffered very little damage. You can see the beauty of the Lost Pines, see what a fire can do to a forest and see the Lost Pines in their toddler stage of growth. Both Bastrop and Buescher State Parks are not far from the North and South shores of Lake Bastrop where you can enjoy a wonderful weekend at the Lake.See more..
My visit was focused on hiking. The park has several hiking trails of various lengths. The trails are flat with plenty of tree coverage and the surface is mostly dirt and pine needles. The Trinity Trail Trail meanders close to Lake Livingston and crosses some of the camp site areas. For those that prefer a paved hike, the Pineywoods Boardwalk offeres a more relax hike of just under a mile. The park also has plenty of slips for campers, as well as fishing and swimming areas. The facilities were clean and well maintained. There is a park store, but it closes on Mondays and Tuesdays.See more..

Located near the San Antonio River, Mission Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga, also known as Aranama Mission or Mission La Bahía, was a Roman Catholic mission established by Spain in 1722 to convert native Karankawa Indians to Christianity. The mission, along with the birthplace of General Ignacio Zaragoza, the Angel of Goliad Statue, and Fannin’s Memorial are part of the Goliad State Park and Historic Site. For a small fee, we were able to visit the mission’s interior, which includes the chapel, work room, museum, and grounds. The staff with whom we came into contact were very friendly and helpful. Persons interested in early Texas history, the life of Indians in Texas, and religious outreach would find visiting this site informative.See more..

This state park in on the border with Mexico and contains a variety of water features which attract a variety of birds. The deck at the visitors center is full of a variety of bird species - herons, egrets, ducks, etc. Well maintained paths allow you to hike to other ponds including one which contains alligators. It was still too early in the year to see gators, but warning signs were posted. The park office closed at 4:30, but you could pay and stay in the park until 10pm. We saw a beautiful sunset.See more..
This is a great state park in Texas. 2 hours from Houston and almost never full. The sites are spacious and clean. The park has two sides which are basically two separate parks with highway 190 between them. I have stayed on both sides. The north side has been repaved and sites are level. My only complaint is there is one dumpster for each side and not in the camping loop. It is a 0.9 mile walk each way from our site to the dumpster. We are in a Class A RV without a tow vehicle so we had no choice but to walk 1.8 miles to dump our trash. I understand the camping loop is a narrow one way road that trash trucks can’t get in but the dumpster was 0.4 miles from the loop entrance. It could be just outside the loop. Maybe have park hosts pick up at each site once each day from like noon to 1pm when checkout is. I don’t wand to have to drag my keep just to throw out trashSee more..

I just love the Texas State Park system! I got a "two-fer" here because I also like visiting old western forts. They never look like the ones in a John Wayne movie. Always more open and larger than expected. As with most of them, the majority of the buildings are no longer around. But you definitely get a feel for the scale of things and the various maps really help. The icing on the cake here is that they did an incredible job restoring the hospital and filling it with things that make you feel like you were there.See more..

4.0Abilene State Park(78 reviews) - What a beautiful state park State Parks
I like this state park. I am a bird watcher, and I love how the place is laid out. It has a mix of camping and hiking that is kind of hidden from view. No matter where you are, the heavy tree cover makes it feel like the place has lots of solitude and more nature experiences. Being located in western Texas, I enjoyed seeing and hearing Black-crested Titmouse and Ladder-backed Woodpeckers. You cannot really find them east of Abilene. The pool and surrounding buildings are beautiful. They were constructed by the conservation corp during the great depression. The red sandstone fits the natural look of the park. The trail system is great. The showers were okay. There was only one in the facility near us, so there is a line at peak shower time. The park has an entrance fee of $5.00 per person per day for day use. The pool is open, but it has special time slots and may require reservations. Call ahead to see when it is open and whether you can get in.See more..
