    Oakwood Cemetery image
Oakwood Cemetery is north of downtown Jefferson, just off North Alley Street, Which runs off Highway 45. East on 45 from Highway 59, then left on N. Alley Street. Cross the railroad tracks and look for the cemetery on the right. Some of the more famous graves are those of Diamond Bessie, a prostitute killed by her jeweler, lover and Jessie Robinson and Bill Rose. Rose and Robinson were friends who killed each other. Their graves are marked by a chain between two iron posts, as their caskets were supposedly chained together because they were so close in life, and had no other friends. The grave of gunfighter, outlaw, Cullen Baker is in Oakwood. He is the subject of several non fiction books, and of several fictionalized accounts by Louis L'amour. In addition, the cemetery is the resting place of those who were powerful and not so powerful, that contributed to the history of Jefferson. Very quiet and serene on our last visit, and recommended to all interested in history. See more..

The most significant tomb/monument in this cemetery is, of course, that of Sam Houston. It is conveniently situated in a corner of the cemetery and clearly visible from the street, so if cemetery browsing isn't your thing, you can easily see just the monument. But do walk all the way around it - there are inscriptions and historical markers on all 4 sides. Don't miss the explanation for "Gov'nor" in the list of Houston's accomplishments! There are other graves with historical significance in the cemetery; it is a small cemetery and with lots of shade, it is a pleasant and easy walk to them. I was very touched by the area where prison inmates reburied and made headstones for unidentified bodies found buried there. The bronze copy of Thorwaldsen's Christus statue in the Powell dell is lovely - be sure to read the inscriptions on three sides. See more..

  13. 4.5 Scottsville Cemetery (18 reviews)
    - Beautiful Statuary
    Cemeteries
    Scottsville Cemetery image
This is a private cemetery located in Scottsville, Texas. I have visited many times, and recently had a chance to share its serenity and beauty with friends. William Thomas Scott moved to Texas in 1840, started a large cotton plantation in Harrison County, and founded the town of Scottsville. The cemetery, although vandalized numerous times, is beautiful, and shows immaculate care. It contains beautiful statuary, the center piece of which is called Weeping Angel. It is based on the style of an 1894 sculpture by William Wetmore Story called Angel of Grief. According to A Comprehensive Guide to Outdoor Sculpture in Texas by Carol Morris Little, the Weeping Angel was carved from Carrera marble, at a cost $40,000 in 1940. There is an impressive chapel on the grounds. It was built by the family of William Scott Youree in his memory. Enjoy the peace and beauty of this special place. See more..
  14. 5.0 Pecan Grove Memorial Cemetery (17 reviews)
    - Beautiful Cemetery - Lots of History
    Cemeteries
    Pecan Grove Memorial Cemetery image
McKinney is very proud of this cemetery and for good reason. It's very old with lots of beautiful headstones, the kind they used to make. The gates are open for visitors during the daytime and its a great place for people who love history (and cemeteries) and statuary art. The roads throughout are good and there are lots of mature trees. Every May there is a Memorial Day celebration early in the day. Year before last they had a couple of Texas senators speak. The Boy Scouts run a luncheon after the event and there is free water and limited seating. The McKinney mounted police are usually there as well as a lot of people in different types of uniforms. I would suggest bringing your own chairs just in case and the seating is generally out in the open so shade hats and possibly sun screen would not be a bad idea. This is a good, family friendly event to attend if you will be in the area over Memorial Day. See more..

    - Alien Grave in Historic Graveyard
    Cemeteries
    Aurora Cemetery image
So after reading about “Ned” and his epic crash in April 1897 I had to visit the grave. Cemetery is very easy to find. Take the last entrance on the left - Beauchamp road and start looking to your right by a large tree for a flat oval stone. Grave marker has been stolen. If you get to the historical marker you’ve gone too far. Usually the stone is covered in “gifts” left for “Ned” like pennies, Star Wars action figures and green items. Cemetery is very well maintained and there is even a geocache there! For a fun other world experience if you’re near the area stop by!!! See more..

It is host to myriad gorgeous flowers and is a restful place for loved ones. I really appreciate the inter-faith nature of this cemetery, and their championing of local artists with the installation of beautiful handcrafted monuments and grave markers. While en route to San Antonio on 4/13/19 this cemetery caught our eye in Menard, Texas because it was positively carpeted in wildflowers. On the way home later that day we made it a point to stop and explore Pioneer Rest. We were not disappointed. We first parked on a side street and walked around. Then we drove in and completed the loop. NOTE- there are rough spots so a 4WD is preferable. At top in the back we found old graves of Texas Rangers. This is a beautiful spot worth the time to explore. See more..
  33. 4.0 Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery (2 reviews)
    - Tremendously moving tribute to lives lost
    Monday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Cemeteries
Nestled in the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery, the Viet Nam Memorial is a moving, haunting tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in this conflict. The memorial and dedication ceremony were realized by the efforts of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1000 which raised $40,000 and provided the building materials for the monument’s construction, and which invested time and manpower to ensure its installation. It was opened after two years of planning by sculptor and Vietnam veteran Troy Kelley. The words that greet visitors at the black granite monument are “Welcome Home, Brothers & Sisters” emblazoned in a large font across the top. Accompanying the welcome are quotes from Vietnam veterans. The monument also has four-panels featuring the different armed forces seals, and bears a tribute section to POW/MIAs. See more..

    - I love old cemeteries - especially historic ones
    Spent < 1 hour Cemeteries
    Masonic Cemetery image
If you love visiting old cemeteries, don't miss this one. I wandered around for at least an hour taking photos of the old gravestones and monument - most from the 1800s. Many had masonic symbols on them and lots of the graves had special stones listing their military service in the civil war (this is the south, so most are confederates). Some of them served in the Texas republic army and those have special markers. Some of the Alamo soldiers families are buried here like the Travis and Crocket familes. Very interesting and historic. My dogs (on leash) were with me and they loved it there too. See more..

    - Take your grave cleaning tool
    Cemeteries
    Blind Lemon Memorial Cemetery image
I give it a good rating due to it's significance not the condition. The whole cemetery is in need of repair. I suppose since it's the "Black" cemetery no one cares. Blind Lemon's request was his grave be kept clean, so we did our best. Didn't realize a lawn mower and weed eater would be needed. I expected more from a Texas Historical Marker. See more..

I have been interested in the story of Cynthia Ann Parker for some time. We were able to travel here to see the fort and cemetery. There are many nice monuments to check out. See more..
  39. 4.0 Mount Zion Cemetery (1 review)
    - Small old historic cemetery
    Cemeteries
This 5-acre cemetery is located on the league of land granted to Robert Clokey, of Stephen F. Austin's Second Colony, in 1831. First grave here was that of an infant, E. A. Metcalfe, who died Sept. 15, 1852. Some unmarked graves may date from a yellow fever epidemic that struck this area in 1867. The cemetery was probably named for the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, located here from 1857 to 1882. Deeded to cemetery trustees in 1881 by owner J. R. Hines, the site contains 13 marked graves, which represent 55 families. The Burton Heritage Society now maintains the property. Among the graves in the cemetery is a large marker for Texas Ranger Captain Leander Harvey “Lee” McNelly. This is also known as Hall Cemetery and Old Baptist Cemetery. The old Burton Baptist Church has been moved onto the property and is being restored. See more..

Originally built in 1908 and rebuilt after an accident years later, the gateway to the Terrace Cemetery in Post is made from large round stones found on area ranches. 42. 3.0 Liberty Catholic Cemetery (1 review)
    - A small cemetery within the city boundaries of Liberty
    Cemeteries
    Liberty Catholic Cemetery image
It isn't a very large cemetery but it does have a lot of the original pioneers of the town buried here. In 1853, twenty-two years after Francisco Madero founded the Villa de la Santissima Trinidad de la Libertad, now the town of Liberty, the Rev. Petrus Marie LaCour came to this area. A native of France, he served as the first pastor of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Acting on behalf of the Galveston Diocese, he purchased this site in 1853 from Pickney L. and Therese A. Palmer as a burial ground for Catholic settlers of the county. A few gravesites were located here when the land was designated a Catholic cemetery. Many of the early graves are those of pioneer French Creole settlers, members of related families that migrated to the region from Louisiana in the mid-nineteenth century. Early residents interred here include LaCours, Gillards, Baillios, DeBlancs, Desrayouxs, Dugats, Fortiers, Benoits, Cannons, Joffrions and Rachals. Their influence as early business, civic and professional leaders had a dramatic impact on Liberty and on the area's social and religious customs. Descendants of the pioneers still serve as active members of the community. It is the oldest Catholic Cemetery in Liberty County. See more..

This cemetery has the beautiful Spence Memorial Peace Garden sculpture by Santa Fe Artist Kirk Tatum. The sculpture is a large wall with carved persons representing all of the peoples of the world. There is a lovely sitting area and four smaller sculptures of dove. The cemetery is also very historically significant with many of the key figures and families of Greenville buried here. One of the notable graves is that of Edgar Ablowich a Greenville native. Ablowich won a gold medal in track at the 1932 Olympics held in Los Angeles. The cemetery has a small covered area and good roads. It is adjacent to the Wright Park golf course. See more..
