Oakwood Cemetery, Texas, United States
4.5 (48 reviews) Spent Ranking #6 in Huntsville Cemeteries
Shady and serene site for history buffs
The most significant tomb/monument in this cemetery is, of course, that of Sam Houston. It is conveniently situated in a corner of the cemetery and clearly visible from the street, so if cemetery browsing isn't your thing, you can easily see just the monument. But do walk all the way around it - there are inscriptions and historical markers on all 4 sides. Don't miss the explanation for "Gov'nor" in the list of Houston's accomplishments! There are other graves with historical significance in the cemetery; it is a small cemetery and with lots of shade, it is a pleasant and easy walk to them. I was very touched by the area where prison inmates reburied and made headstones for unidentified bodies found buried there. The bronze copy of Thorwaldsen's Christus statue in the Powell dell is lovely - be sure to read the inscriptions on three sides.

Large cemetery
We like to randomly visit old cemeteries so while in town to see everything Sam Houston we had to stop here. First of all let me state that it was a bit hard to find. Instead of putting the address into my phone for directions, I put in the name of the cemetery which led us on a incorrect track through a sketchy area. It was only after leaving that area that we happened upon the correct place. We walked around and looked at some of the headstones plus a beautiful part named Powell Sanctuary then went to another section. That was where Sam's grave and monument were and apparently there were maps too. It was too late in the day by then to walk around any more. I would suggest finding the statue of Sam Houston and going from there.
