    Bats in Round Rock image
Bats nest at Round Rock under the McNeil Flyover. We were told of the location by chance after visiting the downtown Austin to see the bats there. Round Rock was by far the better experience but the numbers are less - only about one million! You sit on the grass about 7.15 pm (bring a blanket) and about 15 minutes later the female bats fly out in colonies to look for bugs and grubs in the fields miles away then return tio feed their young. Apparantly the male bats "live" somewhere else. There is plenty to see and the place is not crowded. About twenty people there on our night. Enthusiasts from a local Bat Group come along and tell you about thenm and put up a small display. Watch out for the hawks looking for dinner as the bats fly past! It was well worth sitting on the grass and I hope my photos give encouragement for others to see the spectacle. See more..
