    - LBJ themed family trip

Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park image
We made a LBJ historical visit that brought us to the parks in Stonewall and Johnson City and to the Library in Austin. It was a great trip. We were in town for Christmas lights and a tour of LBJ’s boyhood home. Not only were the parks and library fantastic, the Rangers went above and beyond. When my youngest left his stamp book in the visitor center in Stonewall, a Ranger texted a picture of it to a Ranger in Johnson City and when we stopped back in to that visitor center were able to arrange to get it back. 4. 4.5 Guadalupe Mountains National Park (165 reviews)
    - Short beautiful hikes
    National Parks
    Guadalupe Mountains National Park image
Two great hikes, the McKittrick trail was crowded but beautiful with the leaves turning. This was a fairly easy hike, we went only to "the grotto" so it was 3.4miles each way and not much elevation gain. We also did the loop to Smith Springs and this was a short but gorgeous trail with the area at the springs a beautiful reward for a little bit of climbing: a green and deciduous oasis different from the desert trail we climbed to get there. This tail was also easy-moderate and only 2.5 miles for the whole loop. The visitor center is in a weird kind-of Covid lockdown with only 6 people allowed in the visitor center at a time, and a ranger enforcing this closely. It is a small center compared to some National Parks, but interesting if you don't feel rushed because people are waiting for you to leave. See more..

  6. 4.0 Chamizal National Memorial (120 reviews)
    - Awesome 50+ Acre Historic Memorial of a Dispute Between Mexico and the United
Sunday: 5:00 AM - 10:00 PM Historic Sites • National Parks • History Museums
    Chamizal National Memorial image
First, the Memorial is bounded by East Paisano Dr., Delta Dr. and San Marcial St. In 1911 Mexico and the US had an arbitration over a piece of land that was cut by the Rio Grande River and floated from the river's Mexican side to the U.S. side. Mexico was awarded the parcel by the arbitrators but the U.S. refused to honor the award for 52 years. These beautiful grounds and a great National Park Service building with a picture history, a museum and picnic area showcase the Chamizal's history. Phenomenal Park Rangers, knowledgeable and extremely nice and fun. Nice gift shop. Bring your camera, picnic and ability to have fun!!! See more..

    Sam Houston National Forest image
This was great for a little city getaway about 90mins from Downtown Houston although the interstate to get there was very clogged and tons of construction. We did the Lone Star Trail and enjoyed the wilderness that we didn’t associate with Texas. Some giant trees, deer, and squirrels as well as a beautiful lake perfect for a picnic or romantic afternoon. Didn’t expect to find this so close to a big city like Houston. See more..

    Lake Livingston Dam image
Many will say a dam is just a dam and while that may be true you need to look for the items which make each unique. This is the largest lake located entirely in Texas and the power plant is coming along nicely. There is great bar fish8ng in the pool below the dam and good camping. See more..
  11. 4.0 Davy Crockett National Forest (21 reviews)
    - Hunting and fishing!

    Davy Crockett National Forest image
OMG! Where do I start! We have been coming to this forest for 20 years and just love every little thing it has to offer. I love my early morning walks along the tall pine trees and taking in the fresh air and sounds of the birds! The camp grounds are clean and safe. Hunting, fishing and camping are the things we enjoy doing here. Hunting is AWESOME! And fishing has been good in the past, but the Ratcliff Lake camp grounds closed for a few years and the lake is grown over with weeds and moss of some sort. This was sad to see, but we are hoping they will take care of this issue. This would be the only reason I have given this review 4 stars. Thanks to the hosts for always taking such good care of us during our stay. See more..

  14. 3.0 Caddo National Grassland (1 review)
    - Very Undeveloped

    Caddo National Grassland image
Very undeveloped National Grassland. Trails are not kept and are difficult to find (no signs). We found two campground areas which do not have full hook-ups. Very primitive here. Seems to be more of a park for hunters and fishermen. See more..
