Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, Texas, United States

Lots of Rocks

Very pretty national recreation area. Mounts of rocks all over. We hiked the South Turkey Creek Trail: fairly easy hike with great views of Lake Meredith. National Passport stamps available at the office.

We'd love to have actually experienced the lake instead of just driving around.
We drove up to Lake Meredith as part of our 2-week long journey to circumnavigate the entire state of Texas. We were disappointed to discover that the park station headquarters was closed. This has happened to us on our journey multiple times, but really? On a Saturday? Anyway, the lake is lovely! It is formed from the Canadian River and is a gorgeous blue-watered lake (at least today!). We drove around to several of the park attractions (there were no park rangers on duty so all the buildings were closed - bummer again). One of our party has one of those park passports, and she was disappointed not to get a stamp for her book. We also tried to find a fishing guide before we got there to spend some time out on the lake. Nope.

    All about fun, not education
Like it says, this is a recreation area--boating, hunting, four-wheeling and a little bit of hiking. But unlike most NPS areas, there is no visitor center and as best as I could determine through a thorough trip through all the scattered park areas, not a single interpretive sign or program. So if you like to camp, water ski, ride ATVs, shoot stuff, this is the place for you. If you come to National Parks to learn something, furgetaboutit.
