We stayed just outside of town at the Local Chapter on a visit to Big Bend National Park. We ate dinner at 3 of the local restaurants and the Starlight was by far the best! While the others were good, the Starlight had a nice atmosphere, great food, and a bar. Plus the adjacent gift shop and surrounding area was interesting to visit while waiting for our table. Across the street we saw rabbits and a roadrunner, plus you can walk among some of the ghost town ruins. At the end of the building they have several bird feeders which made for an entertaining watch. Also, the gift shop, which closed at 8, had a ton of stuff and an excellent book section. We ordered a variety of dishes and all were delicious! We had the bbq, salad with shrimp, pork and tacos. The story of the theater was interesting and added to the ambiance. Wait staff was a little slow, but they were super busy. Loved this place! See more..

When we got into San Antonio we asked about a family friendly have dinner and go line dancing. Hands down, the locals recommended John poore's. from The Nostalgia it comes with a country honky-tonk to the homemade tamales and pleasant crowd, we were not disappointed. we live in the area, and are season ticketholders at Criders. memorial day through labor day, every Friday night is the fish fry. fabulous. then Saturday night is rodeo. husband used to come here in the 1970's and be IN the rodeo. now we very much enjoy watching those kids. put our 5 yr old grandson in mutton bustin the other weekend. what a scream! you just sign em up, criders has vests and helmets. it's a great atmosphere for all , 8-80. go for some dinner, see the rodeo, starts around 8-8:30, then head over to the dance with live music, under the giant live oak. they have beer and wine coolers. there must be 500 people every Saturday night. a very special piece of small town texas, not to be missed if you are visiting. We stopped by to check this place out for a wedding. The buildings on the property are well over 140 years old and there is a lot of history here. The entire site is very nice for a wedding or other event. They have live music on many days in the dance hall area and a County Gospel Music show on the last Sunday of every month. See more..
