The park rangers were very helpful here, and we were able to purchase our back-country permits. I was so glad to find a gas station near the visitor center. Because the drive into Big Bend is so long, the gas station was a great find - and the gas prices were not the high-priced, gouging prices you'd expect at a solitary location. See more..

The fachwerk beams were shipped from France to Castroville, TX in 1998, as a gift to the people of Medina County. The Alsatian volunteers came to Castroville and put the house back together, decorating it with furniture that was donated by the Alsatian people and shipped over. Now it serves as a museum and a visitor center for everyone to enjoy. See more..

Amistad National Recreation Area Visitors Center image
This lake is definitely a hidden gem. I never knew about Lake Amistad until I travel to Alpine/Big Bend. It curves through canyons and into three rivers. There is a dam there but unfortunately since 911 there is no access there and going into Mexico. It’s blissful quietness. Which is some thing I strive for. My friend and I just took a mini tour on the way home. I stayed in an Airbnb but it was not as close as I thought to the lake. Next time I would like to rent some thing right on the lake and take a boating trip. Definitely worth checking out for a long weekend. See more..
