Amistad National Recreation Area Visitors Center, Texas, United States

Spectacular turquoise water!

This lake is definitely a hidden gem. I never knew about Lake Amistad until I travel to Alpine/Big Bend. It curves through canyons and into three rivers. There is a dam there but unfortunately since 911 there is no access there and going into Mexico. It’s blissful quietness. Which is some thing I strive for. My friend and I just took a mini tour on the way home. I stayed in an Airbnb but it was not as close as I thought to the lake. Next time I would like to rent some thing right on the lake and take a boating trip. Definitely worth checking out for a long weekend.

    Excellent Park Ranger
A place of great learning. Well-maintained and very clean restrooms. Looked forward to our drive through the area. The park ranger was clear and gave great advice! Had a good time!

Really great place to spend a couple of days exploring.
Spent 3 nights in Del Rio and so was able to enjoy Amistad for two full days. Plenty to explore and some really good trails, particularly where starting from Diablo East. Weather was fine during visit and so able to make most of my days. Option also to walk cross over the Amistad Dam into Mexico. Dam interesting to see but nothing across border to warrant interest. You will need your passport even if not driving off other side of dam. Visitor Centre for NRA is situated between Del Rio and the dam. They have good displays to view and many free pamphlets on the walks and what else to see. Staff were helpful and knowledgeable too.
