While in Dallas October of 2022, we visited the ICR Discovery Museum. We spent 6 hours there and found the exhibits very interesting and informative. The oceanography film on the planetarium screen was fantastic. We were not bored at any time. We also visited the Biblical Art Museum and found the art work extremely interesting. Loved the silver pieces of==for the Jewish holiday - goblets, candlesticks, bread trays. The holocaust exhibit was very informative. The Christian art was impressive - especially the cast-copies of Michelangelo's work. We didn't get to hike the Katy Trail but did hike by a lake near our Holiday Inn Express Hotel. See more..

    Barton Creek Greenbelt image
If you walk far enough you come upon these "hidden pools" that are a locals secret..oops.Great place to walk you dog, or just take a hike. Bring a swimsuit, because after that hike you might to take a swim in these hidden pools. Note to parents: you might not want to bring kids to these pools because there is a lot of topless sunbathing and swimming, plus on really hot weekend days, these pools tend to attract the massive beer drinking types. 8. 4.5 Bluebonnet Trail (164 reviews)
    - Still Pretty even at the end of April
    Hiking Trails • Scenic Drives
    Bluebonnet Trail image
You absolutely must stop in the Visitor Center (on Main st) before starting out. They will show you the best places to see bluebonnets, where to park, etc, and give you a good map to follow. Trying to follow the signs without the map is challenging - better to get instructions from a Visitor Guide. We came on the last day of the trail (April 30) and there was still plenty of flowers to see. IMO, the best place for photos was near the lake. That area had the most Indian Paintbrush mixed in with the Bluebonnets. Keep an eye on the little ones so they don't fall off the edge into the water. Saw lots of families with their dogs. See more..

My husband and I were in Kerrville for our anniversary weekend and enjoyed walking on the trail 2 mornings. We were impressed with the condition of the trail and met the nicest couple in their 80’s that walk the trail daily. A great place to soak up some nature and get some exercise on the 6 mile route. 11. 4.5 Closed Canyon (84 reviews)
    - Beautiful hike through a narrow canyon!

    Closed Canyon image
Our kids loved this hike and had plenty of opportunities to climb rocks. There are some areas that require steady feet and/or good knees, so don't go alone if you aren't fit. You can't make it all the way to the Rio Grande - there is an "end of the trail" marker where the drop offs get too steep to get back up without assistance. Also, a new pit toilet is being built at the parking area which will be helpful. See more..
  12. 4.0 Sam Nail Ranch (78 reviews)
    - Quick shady walk
    Hiking Trails
    Sam Nail Ranch image
We stopped at the pullout here and took a quick walk through the Sam Nail Ranch area. We especially liked the shady sections of the trail near an old (but still running) windmill that waters the pecan trees. This was a nice diversion and a good way to stretch our legs during a day with a lot of scenic driving. We spent about 20 minutes going around the loop trail. See more..

How I wish I was visiting during the blooms or fall seasons! Lots of roads to drive to take landscape/foliage pictures or look for birds. Lots of trails to hike, too. But I was visiting at the wrong time of year. Lots of picnic areas. I didn't see bathrooms, but I wasn't looking either. See more..

This is a fantastic and unique park! Highly recommend! Plan for 1-2 hours, and bring scooters/bikes. I wouldn’t stay too long after sundown but the evening is great in summer. Some areas are well lit and others not lit at all, once it’s dark. See more..
  17. 4.5 Devil's Hall Trail (74 reviews)
    - Scrambling Adventure
    Hiking Trails
    Devil's Hall Trail image
This was our family favorite hike while visiting the National Parks in Texas and New Mexico. We had originally planned on summiting Guadalupe, but wind speeds were up to 80mph so we had to change our plans. The first mile of this is a well packed, rocky trail before descending into the wash for some bouldering the second mile. We made it to the hikers staircase and into Devils Hall. The boulders are very smooth and slick in several spots so good tread shoes are best. Probably took about 3 hours as the rocky part is slow going. As with all park trails, parking is limited so arrive early. (We showed up at 11 and the lot was full but the rangers let us use the tent camp parking.) See more..
  18. 4.5 Lake Houston Wilderness Park (59 reviews)
    - New Cabins!
Sunday: 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM Parks • Hiking Trails
    Lake Houston Wilderness Park image
The new cabins are Lake Houston are amazing. Air conditioned and right on the lake, they sleep a maximum of 6 (2 queen beds and 1 pull out couch). We stayed in June - it was VERY hot and the fish in the lake had not matured enough for fishing but those would be my only complaints. The cabin was very clean and perfect for a nice weekend getaway in the wilderness. See more..
  19. 4.5 Rose Rudman Recreational Trail (49 reviews)
    - Something for all
    Hiking Trails
    Rose Rudman Recreational Trail image
The Rudman trail is a true Jem. This network of trails, comprised of 4 individual paths is paved, double wide trail that winds through South Tyler. Rudman Loop 1.2 miles, Southside Trail .5 miles, Creekside Trial .75 miles and Grande Trail 1.7 miles. Several of the trails go end/begin at parks. This makes it very convenient if you are walking, running, biking with children. Playground equip, bathrooms, water fountains, etc can be found. The trails offer a challenge in both distance and in elevation. You can link trails or sections of trails to "change it up." Tyler is planning expansion of this trail system to incorporate new areas. As this grows, I forse local businesses catering to trail goers. The trail is well maintained, patrolled by Tyler PD Bike police, great landscaping, great shade, family friendly and open daily until Midnight. See more..

  21. 4.0 Hoodoos Trailhead (46 reviews)

    Hoodoos Trailhead image
If you have been to Bryce or probably any other hoodoo area, do not wast your time. A couple of interesting shapes but that's it. Pretty, set along the Rio Grande, but not worth the effort. Saw some others bring tubes to float. That looked like fun. See more..

  23. 4.5 Lower Burro Mesa Pour-off Trail (43 reviews)
    - Pour-off is about 100 feet tall
    Hiking Trails
Lower Burro Mesa Pour-off Trail image
My husband and I enjoyed the Lower Burro Mesa Pour-off Trail. The trail is only one mile round trip and is relatively flat. To get to the trail we drove a short one mile paved road off Ross Maxwell scenic drive / main road. There is a sign on Ross Maxwell scenic drive. There is a parking lot at the end of the road and the trail head. The trail starts across the desert toward a canyon. At the canyon, the trail turns to the right and goes up a dry flat creek. I am sure it is not always dry. This is the halfway point. The plant life is greener and more plentiful in the canyon. The Pour-off (waterfall) is at the end of the canyon. The Pour-off was dry when we arrived (late April) but the Pour-off was interesting. The Pour-off is about 100 feet tall. We could really see what the power of water can do to rock. Great trail. 24. 4.0 Cottonbelt Trail (40 reviews)
    - Neat trail, little shade
    Hiking Trails
    Cottonbelt Trail image
We took our toddler out to ride his bike on the trail, not knowing what to expect. The end of the bridge crossing the river was under construction, so we had to walk through a little mud, then the trail further down was completely closed for some other construction project (couldn’t tell what it was). Only shade along the whole trail was where the ramp crosses under the bridge. If it had been a cooler day, that wouldn’t have been a problem. See more..
  25. 4.0 Mule Ears Spring Trail (39 reviews)
    - Seen across the park
    Hiking Trails
    Mule Ears Spring Trail image
The Mule Ears are a set of twin volcanic dikes that were left as pointed projections into the sky. They can be seen from most any location in the eastern half of the park and are a good spatial reference. We saw them from Ross Maxwell, Terlingua, Santa Elena and even the mountains of the South Rim. At dawn returning from Santa Elena around Cerro Castellan the sky gave the appearance from Mordor in Lord of the Rings. They are a signature feature for Big Bend. See more..
  26. 4.0 Tuff Canyon Trail (35 reviews)
    - Thought the Views were Just OK
Spent 1-2 hours Canyons • Hiking Trails • Geologic Formations
    Tuff Canyon Trail image
You can take the short loop of the Tuff Canyon Trail to the overlooks of the canyon or the 1 mile spur trail and walk through the canyon. We visited on Saturday October 30 and took the spur trail to walk through the canyon and coming back up, we went to the 2 overlooks. It's not too difficult but we thought the views were just OK. 27. 4.5 Cedar Breaks Park (34 reviews)
    - Great park with shade and scenery
Spent More than 3 hours Biking Trails • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
    Cedar Breaks Park image
Went here for a 2 day stay in site #36 right on the lake. We had a beautiful view from our trailer over the lake. We set our chairs up right under the trees and had plenty of shade. Many of these sites are not big rig friendly. We saw several large fifth wheels scrapping tree tops. Many of the sites don't go very far back either. While our site was sloped it was level from side to side. The picknic table are all under covered structures and while they are old they seem to be in good shape. We enjoyed this COE campground especially when using our senior pass getting a $13 per day rate. See more..
  28. 4.5 Chalkridge Falls Park (33 reviews)
    - Nice Little Outdoor Excursion
    Parks • Hiking Trails
    Chalkridge Falls Park image
The Chalk Ridge waterfalls are a nice little place to get outdoors in the Belton/Temple area! The hike isn’t too grueling and is mostly covered by trees. Getting down to the water is quite steep so it isn’t well suited for elderly. I as a young person even struggled. We went on a Saturday and it was pretty crowded. The falls are relatively small but the water is nice and cold! Great way too cool off and enjoy some nature! See more..
  29. 4.5 Bandera City Park (31 reviews)
    - More than a park for picnics!!
Spent More than 3 hours Parks • Hiking Trails
    Bandera City Park image
The Bandera City Park is right on the Medina River. The park has wonderful amenities to include playgrounds, pavilions, tables, etc. like you would expect to find at a park. But then you see the beautiful river. The Medina River is incredibly blue, green. With huge trees over hanging the river. You will see folks kayaking, tubing, swimming, jumping off rocks, swinging from ropes in trees and just having a great time. I had come out to support friends in a BBQ cook off, but I spent most of my time wishing I had worn my swim suit!!! I will be back soon with suit and towel in tow. And of course - to make the day perfect - in the early evening as we were leaving, we saw fire flies. Great place - we will be back!! And soon!!! See more..

    Hiking Trails
    Lick Creek Trail image
Me and my husband found this trail only after a year of living in College Station. It was rather a good find. There are various trails in the park and very well kept. It is all gravel and firm muddy trail. There was some kind of maintainence going on but nothing that would stop the experience. Good for a day’s hike, bike or just to take your dog for a stroll. Since it was just the end of winter and spring is around the corner, it wasnt all green but i believe it will look much much beautiful during once the greenery is back. Will visit again. See more..
  35. 4.5 Double Lake Recreation Area (21 reviews)
    - Double Lake - Double A++
Spent 2-3 hours Biking Trails • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
    Double Lake Recreation Area image
My wife and I have been camping here a few times. We have stayed on both the tent side with no electric and RV side with electric. We are tent campers, and, in the summer, the electric side is better as we can use electric fans. No matter, though, you will be able to find a beautifully, wooded campsite. We were introduced to Double Lake by friends, and, living 45 minutes away, we love this campground. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. The sites are very well kept. There are both rustic sites with potable water and electric sites. The swimming area is exceptionally clean. Sites can be reserved in advanced or you can try a walk on site. This is our favorite weekend camping spot near Houston. What to do while there? Relax, swim, fish, kayak, mountain bike, walk the trails, and, oh yeah, relax. See more..

    Colleyville Nature Center image
A hidden JEWEL !! 3.5 miles of paved and unpaved trails around 9 ponds give you an opportunity to quickly be with nature in a large metro area. I enjoy birding/ photography here but many come for the fishing and family time at the play structure and pavilion. Little Bear Creek runs along the south side. Climate controlled restrooms and a water fountain have really added to the overall experience! See more..
  37. 4.0 Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge (19 reviews)
    - Great place to roam around and launch a canoe
Spent More than 3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Equestrian Trails • Hiking Trails
Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge image
My husband and I went to Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge on a Tuesday morning. We drove the Auto Tour Route and other roads (paved, gravel, dirt). Some roads are only open to vehicle traffic September 15 to December 31. The visitor’s center was closed, probably due to Covid-19. Luckily, there were not many mosquitoes on our visit. We saw remains of the 1942 Longhorn Army Ammunition plant. The plant operated for about 48 years. We saw deer, ducks and one snake. Our favorite lake viewing location was at the Ken Gentry Pavilion. That looked like a great place to launch a canoe or kayak. There are many hiking trails; Cemetery Trail, Magazine Trail, the Starr Ranch Trail and a short wildlife blind trail. The NMR is open 7 days a week from sunrise to sunset. There is no entrance fee. We could have easily spent a half day but we spent an hour. See more..

  42. 4.5 Pine Canyon Trail (14 reviews)
    - Fantastic Big Bend Hiking Experience!
    Hiking Trails
    Pine Canyon Trail image
This is a fantastic dirt road and hiking experience in Big Bend NP. Drive about 2 miles south on Glenn Springs dirt road, turn right onto Pine Canyon road for another 4+ miles. There are a couple of challenging washes on these dirt road and a vehicle with high ground clearance and off road rated tires is required. There is a small parking area at the trailhead. The trail is more than 2 miles up into the foothills and into Pine Canyon. The last half mile of which is mostly an uphill scramble in a narrow canyon. The falls only flows immediately after a rain. However, the varied views of the valley and looking east from the trail are worth the hike even if the falls is not flowing. See more..

If you're up for a bone-jostling drive of about 35 minutes in and back out again (my Subaru Outback did just fine!), this is a hidden gem in a park full of wonderful spots. Geologically fascinating (look for the fossilized clams!) and really beautiful generally, I'd say this was one of the best decisions we made on our trip to Big Bend. We saw one other car the whole time. See more..

This place is not fully done yet but it’s in a perfect location if you’re in the mood to just have 1-2 hrs of relaxing walk! There are 7 places to eat so far which all are unique and great as well as handful of shops. A beautiful European style fountain, chapel, and bell tower are just a few unique sites to stop and take pictures. My favorite however is walking through the neighborhood and the board walk area and actually walk around the chapel with sidewalks for public to use on one side of the lake. See more..
