Great Hike— Beautiful

This is a real hidden treasure. Definitely worth exploring if you’re into beautiful scenery and petroglyphs. Recommend as a morning outing and allow 2 hours to explore and appreciate the ancient artwork. Signs warn of video monitoring so please don’t even think about defacing this treasure.

Off the beaten path but worth it!
This trail is accessible in Terlinua, without even entering the national park. A small dirt road leads you a open area where you can park your car and walk a few hundred feet to the trail head (fenced area with a small opening). The rocks here are so unusual in color and shape than the rest of the Big Bend area. We went to see the ancient drawings on the rocks but that was not the highlight as you have to look really hard to see them. The sheer size of the rocks along with the close up views of the plants in the area makes this a small hike not to miss. Easy terrain and max one hour needed, drive time down the dirt road plus the hike.

    Off the beaten path
This is an out-of-the way trail that is slightly hard to find. It is not a difficult trail, but there is no shade. It was 96 degrees the day we did it (in April), and thankfully we had plenty of water. The hike itself is not that special other than you do feel like you are out in the middle of the desert, which is unusual in and of itself. However, if you walk back into the rocks, there are many petroglyphs and pictographs to search for. It is really cool to see them, and our teenage boys thought that was one of the best things during our visit to Big Bend.
