Beautiful hike through a narrow canyon!

Our kids loved this hike and had plenty of opportunities to climb rocks. There are some areas that require steady feet and/or good knees, so don't go alone if you aren't fit. You can't make it all the way to the Rio Grande - there is an "end of the trail" marker where the drop offs get too steep to get back up without assistance. Also, a new pit toilet is being built at the parking area which will be helpful.

Short hike in a beautiful slot canyon.
Our kayak guide recommended we stop and walk through the Closed Canyon on our way from Big Bend to Van Horn. Definitely worth the stop! This slot canyon was created by water, so it's wider than the slot canyons formed by wind in Arizona . . . but still very cool. The canyon walls go straight up, so it was a very comfortable temperature during the early afternoon (no direct sunlight). We did hear a rock fall walking out, so we started to pay more attention walking back. We heard another one falling and could see it come down - we were a safe distance away. Scanning the top of the canyon wall I told my wife to look at the perfectly symmetrical cactus - and then it moved. It was a longhorn sheep! And then we saw another. We believe they were responsible for dislodging the rocks that came down. This should not be a deterrent for exploring this canyon . . . just be mindful of your surroundings.

Great Slot Canyon to witness the power of water.
This is a short hike in Big Bend State Park on the El Camino del Rio. It is a dry wash slot canyon that is a great 1.5 - 2.0 mile hike. Our group really enjoyed this and it is easy to see why. As you enter the canyon the 100' walls go straight up. When we visited the canyon, it was totally in shadows with only the tops bathed in sunlight. This is good short hike without much change in elevation. It is simply amazing to see and realize the power of water cutting this rock. If you are on the El Camino del Rio, stop here to see.
