Devil's Hall Trail, Texas, United States

4.5 (74 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Guadalupe Mountains National Park Hiking Trails

Scrambling Adventure

This was our family favorite hike while visiting the National Parks in Texas and New Mexico. We had originally planned on summiting Guadalupe, but wind speeds were up to 80mph so we had to change our plans. The first mile of this is a well packed, rocky trail before descending into the wash for some bouldering the second mile. We made it to the hikers staircase and into Devils Hall. The boulders are very smooth and slick in several spots so good tread shoes are best. Probably took about 3 hours as the rocky part is slow going. As with all park trails, parking is limited so arrive early. (We showed up at 11 and the lot was full but the rangers let us use the tent camp parking.)

Best Hike in Guadalupe Mountains National Park! So much fun!!
We did this 4.2 mile roundtrip hike on Thursday, October 28 and it was a lot of fun. We started around 8 am and did not see anyone until we got to the Hiker's Staircase. The first mile is a maintained trail and the second mile is unmaintained where you just need to follow the wash. It did take us 2.5 hours to get to the end of this trail because of the amount of rock scrambling. There isn't much of a "trail" to follow because it becomes a bunch of rocks and you just move forward to find the best path. Definitely bring hiking poles and gloves because it will help with the rock scrambling. The entire hike took us around 3 hours and 15 minutes and it was quite tiring. AllTrails rates this hike as hard. On the day we went, we saw around 20 people on the trail so not too crowded. Interestingly, pretty much everyone we encountered who was coming in asked if they were on the right trail. Basically you just have to follow the wash. Also, my phone did have a time change in the middle of the trail. This was a great hike. So much fun!!

    Lovely trail
The NPS service now rates this hike as strenuous. We didn't feel so. It also lists the trail as 3.8mi RT. It was definitely 4.2mi at least. When we hiked last year, it was rated moderate 'only at the end' due to bouldering. I don't feel like there was much bouldering. Most of the trail has a path weaving around/between any large rocks. The staircase was easy. The very end has a spot you do have to boulder up. We hiked with our kids (2 & 4.) Our four year old did the whole hike on his own with very few complaints. Our two year old made it almost all the way in; he was packed the whole way out due to being past nap time. It can be hot! We went mid-May, in the middle of the afternoon, and I was comfortable. My husband was a bit hot. Almost the entirety of the trail is in direct sun so we did use more water on this hike than many longer hikes. We completed it in 4 hours, kids in tow and all.
