Ernst Tinaja Trail, Texas, United States

4.5 (13 reviews) Spent Ranking #25 in Big Bend National Park Hiking Trails

A Real Gem!

If you're up for a bone-jostling drive of about 35 minutes in and back out again (my Subaru Outback did just fine!), this is a hidden gem in a park full of wonderful spots. Geologically fascinating (look for the fossilized clams!) and really beautiful generally, I'd say this was one of the best decisions we made on our trip to Big Bend. We saw one other car the whole time.

    Very unique find!
We loved hiking this trail with our 3 small children. They enjoyed climbing on all the rocks along the trail. Very interesting and unique rock formations. You DO need a truck or other high clearance vehicle. It’s a 25 minute drive down a VERY rough dirt road to get to the trailhead. We thought the drive was worth it once we reached the tinaja!

    Fabulous find!
After a slow tedious 5 mile drive on one lane rocky rutted roads, this gem of a place is exhilarating! The hike back to the prettiest area is rigorous and not for the faint hearted, though there were families with small children making it. It’s about 3 miles round trip from the trailhead. In Jan., the temps varied from 60-70 and there weren’t a lot of people there.
