Wonderful hike along the South Rim
We had a great overnight trip to the South Rim. We’re experienced backpackers, and probably could’ve done this as a day trip like many others, but we’re so glad we spent the night and had the chance to see the night sky over the Chisos Mountains. I’d recommend a campsite along and in the middle of the South Rim for the fine sunset and sunrise views. The NPS website is correct when it says there are no sources of water on the trail, so be sure to pack all that you need. Like many desert climates, it was warm during the day and very cold at night, and the transition from cold to warm to cold was very fast. For sea-level folks, be aware that the starting elevation is about 5500’, climbing to about 7500’.

Can't wait to do it again!
My son and I love to backpack, and although we've lived in Texas for most of his life, we had never been to Big Bend. Wow! We went during the 1st week of December for my son's 21st birthday. We saw snow on the shady parts of the trail, and the nighttime temperature was 30 degrees. On the first night, we camped on the Northeast rim, past the South Rim. We arrived at the rim just in time to set up our tents and eat dinner as the sun was setting. We were up early in the morning to see the sunrise. On more than one occasion, we had deer walk within 10 feet of us with no fear. The trail is a beautiful hike, and we both intend to do it again. Do not rely on finding water on the trail. Although we like to go ultralight, we each carried 6-7 liters. In planning to do the outer mountain loop, we cashed water at the water boxes at the Homer Wilson ranch.
