Thousand Steps Trail, Texas, United States

4.5 (27 reviews) Spent Ranking #23 in El Paso Hiking Trails

A great & worthwhile challenge!

Wow! Very impressed with the trailhead and parking. Recommend using AllTrails app to assure yourself that you remain on the trail and also to be able to explore the secondary trails. Views are very nice. Loved the challenging hike. Nothing better than this hike followed up by an ice cold beer or margarita which are plentiful in El Paso.

    Breathtaking view of El Paso
If you love El Paso, as I do, then you must find time to hike the 1,000 Steps Trail. There are a couple of websites with good directions to the trail head (I've posted them below). This is a tough but manageable hike. As with all hikes in El Paso be sure you carry plenty of WATER. I always carry a big load at the start of the hike and make small caches along the route up. My load gets lighter the higher I go, and there is water waiting for me along my route down (assuming you don't opt to ride the tramway down or descend an alternate route). I recommend checking the Celebration of Our Mountains website for group hikes. Celebration of Our Mountains is a wonderful local group that schedules hikes throughout the area. Their link is pasted below. All links below offer directions to the trailhead. Find time to make this hike. You won't be disappointed. http://www.celebmtns.org/2010/day-after-thanksgiving-on-the-thousand-steps-trail/ http://franklinmountainsflora.com/trails.php?trailid=5 http://www.localhikes.com/Hikes/FMSP_1000_Steps_Trail_2320.asp

    Don't Count The Steps...
We hiked there with our dog at the end of the day just in time to see the sunset and other great views of El Paso. Well kept trails, the scenery changes quite often after every turn, you may need to bring a map if you want to get the whole picture, it's quite big. Get up to Wyler tramway ridge (twin antennas on top) or continue on to Robinson street, which is on the opposite side. The best entrance would be from Stanton Street (ride it till its end) or from Robinson Street. I'd rate the trails as Moderate with some difficult sections.
