Very helpful!

The park rangers were very helpful here, and we were able to purchase our back-country permits. I was so glad to find a gas station near the visitor center. Because the drive into Big Bend is so long, the gas station was a great find - and the gas prices were not the high-priced, gouging prices you'd expect at a solitary location.

Watch the Movie and Talk to a Ranger
Stop and talk to a ranger while you get your parks permit! For all you map nerds (like me), check out the giant topographic map of the park! And I concur with the other reviews about watching the movie! It's got a lot of really good/important information about the park in it, (like where the bears and mountain lions hang out, and details about the flora and fauna). Likewise, the rangers are full of useful information, so stop in for a chat! We were concerned about some youthful coyotes who were approaching the cars on the main road. When we went in to report it to a ranger, the ranger was super helpful and let us know there are actually 3 in the park. Coyotes are super smart and adaptable. If a single person feeds them from a car, they learn "cars are safe, they give food". So PLEASE, don't feed the coyotes! They are in the most amazing natural habitat! When people feed them from cars, they learn to approach the cars and ultimately some of them get hit. :( No food or drinks here (aside from the vending machines on the outside), but plenty of books, gear, and other trinkets.

    Peculiar visit
If you look this up on Google Maps, it states that it is open 24 hours. It is not. It opens at 8 a.m. Evidently, you can get gas at the nearby gas station 24/7. Well, the reason I titled this as a "peculiar visit" is because we were there about 7:30 a.m. and it opens at 8 a.m. and we did not feel like waiting, since we had a long drive ahead. What we *did* see was the small garden walkway next to the place, as well as Big Bend National Park in general. The walkway was interesting, with specimen plants one sees throughout the park, clearly labeled as to what they were, along with interesting info about them. The park itself has unique desert scenery, and it is huge, so there are a variety of things to see and do. Unfortunately, my wife cannot hike, especially in the heat, so we didn't hike. Wish I could say more.
