Awesome 50+ Acre Historic Memorial of a Dispute Between Mexico and the United

First, the Memorial is bounded by East Paisano Dr., Delta Dr. and San Marcial St. In 1911 Mexico and the US had an arbitration over a piece of land that was cut by the Rio Grande River and floated from the river's Mexican side to the U.S. side. Mexico was awarded the parcel by the arbitrators but the U.S. refused to honor the award for 52 years. These beautiful grounds and a great National Park Service building with a picture history, a museum and picnic area showcase the Chamizal's history. Phenomenal Park Rangers, knowledgeable and extremely nice and fun. Nice gift shop. Bring your camera, picnic and ability to have fun!!!

    Large Border Park and Museum
This park was created near the US and Mexico border to recognize the border dispute caused by the shifting Rio Grande River. The park itself was quite large with lots of space, an open theatre, old border markers and a museum administered by the National Park Service. The museum was small but filled with lots of good information about the original border agreement, some of the friction caused as the river flooded and shifted and the resulting resolution between the two countries. Staff were friendly and helpful. Admission was free. The gift shop on site was quite small. Bathrooms inside were large and clean.

A small, but fascinating bit of history
This National Memorial commemorates a rather fascinating bit of US/Mexican history. There is a good short movie and some very good interpretive displays and plenty of text to familiarize the visitor with the longstanding dispute over which nation would own which pieces of land when the Rio Grande River changed course. The dispute was a century old when President Lyndon John son and Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateos hammered out an agreement. The effects on the people of the region were significant and the museum does a great job describing that.
