A Large portion of the Bastrop State Park was destroyed by a devasting fire in September of 2011. The community along with the State and other organizations have been replanting the trees. Although it doesn't possess the same beauty it offers an interesting perspective in how a forest is regrown. There are still a number of areas that were not burned that you can see as well as a number of the Historic buildings. This park is listed in the National Historic Registry. There is RV and tent camping available. Bastrop State Park is located next to Buescher State Park and suffered very little damage. You can see the beauty of the Lost Pines, see what a fire can do to a forest and see the Lost Pines in their toddler stage of growth. Both Bastrop and Buescher State Parks are not far from the North and South shores of Lake Bastrop where you can enjoy a wonderful weekend at the Lake.

This state park is about 3 to 4 hours from Houston and Dallas. It is a good park for people who are camping for the first few time since it is close to the city with many restaurants and shopping. It has nice easy hikes with a great overview at the end of the hike. Some people drive up to the top of the hill and then hike around the lake. The shortest hike is 3 miles round trip. In the Bastrop lake one can swim, rent canoes or fish. Fishing requires a license that needs to be purchased online. Campground has great amenities, drinking water clean bathroom and shower but no electricity. During the day was hot but nice at night

recoving well
Visited for the first time since the fires in 2011. The park is nothing like it used to be but it is coming along. I do wish the golf course was still at the park. I will forever miss it. The entry is $5 per person or $70 for annual pass that can be used at any state park. The campsites looked very clean. Some day I hope to stay in one of the cabins. A nice day hanging with the family. Staff is very friendly.
