What a beautiful state park

I like this state park. I am a bird watcher, and I love how the place is laid out. It has a mix of camping and hiking that is kind of hidden from view. No matter where you are, the heavy tree cover makes it feel like the place has lots of solitude and more nature experiences. Being located in western Texas, I enjoyed seeing and hearing Black-crested Titmouse and Ladder-backed Woodpeckers. You cannot really find them east of Abilene. The pool and surrounding buildings are beautiful. They were constructed by the conservation corp during the great depression. The red sandstone fits the natural look of the park. The trail system is great. The showers were okay. There was only one in the facility near us, so there is a line at peak shower time. The park has an entrance fee of $5.00 per person per day for day use. The pool is open, but it has special time slots and may require reservations. Call ahead to see when it is open and whether you can get in.

    Beautiful wooded park
My husband and I had an awesome time camping in Abilene state park for 3 nights. We were surprised to see so many trees. We stayed in the Oak Grove campground (sites 85-90) with full hookups for $20 a night. Other RV sites were $18 and tent sites were $15. We had a picnic table and ground grill. Our driveway was long enough the handle our 27 trailer and truck. The Pecan Grove campsite had shorter driveways, about 25 feet long. Beware of Wagon Circle because it is overflow camping and crowded. The trails were nice and wide. We saw lots of birds at bird blind. The lake is big and has a fishing pier. The canoes and kayaks were not available for rent due to covid-19. The road to the boat ramp was narrow, dirt and had some deep holes. The swimming pool was closed but it looked beautiful. The CCC building and old water tower were nice and near the pool. We saw lots of deer, birds and squirrels. The daily entrance fee is $5 for people 13+ years old or free with the annual Texas park pass. The rangers were friendly. I will be back.

    Nice Trails
We arrived later in the evening and camped for the night (we had booked online). We checked in the next morning and had a great chat with the two ladies in the front office. They were very nice and helpful. Afterward, we hiked all of the trails in the main park. They were all very easy and pleasant. We then headed over to the lake to hike the trail there but the entire area was closed due to a hunt. It was a small bummer but didn't ruin our time there. It's a very nice park with sweet and kind staff members. If you are staying overnight, keep an eye and ear out for pigs. There was a lot of activity after 10 pm or so in our campground. They tore into the neighbor's trash and spread it everywhere so make sure you hang your trash bags a good 5 to 6 feet off the ground!
