Fort Richardson State Park and Historic Site, Texas, United States

Awesome historic site

I just love the Texas State Park system! I got a "two-fer" here because I also like visiting old western forts. They never look like the ones in a John Wayne movie. Always more open and larger than expected. As with most of them, the majority of the buildings are no longer around. But you definitely get a feel for the scale of things and the various maps really help. The icing on the cake here is that they did an incredible job restoring the hospital and filling it with things that make you feel like you were there.

    Swimming at Lake Jacksboro
This is a review for the beach portion of Fort Richardson State Park. Feels like a private beach. Very few families swimming here. At least a couple times during our stay here, we were the only swimmers at the beach/lake.

Camping with a twist of history
We spent three nights here. The campgrounds are amazing. The bathrooms were kept clean, the grounds and trails were beautiful and the people were very friendly. We took a tour of Fort Richardson historical site and our guide, Cameron, was so knowledgeable. He knew many facts about the history of the site and his stories made the tour so interesting. This is an amazing campground to visit and it was interesting to realize how important Fort Richardson was in developing our western frontier.
