Estero Llano Grande State Park, Texas, United States

4.5 (140 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Weslaco State Parks

Beautiful evening bird walk

This state park in on the border with Mexico and contains a variety of water features which attract a variety of birds. The deck at the visitors center is full of a variety of bird species - herons, egrets, ducks, etc. Well maintained paths allow you to hike to other ponds including one which contains alligators. It was still too early in the year to see gators, but warning signs were posted. The park office closed at 4:30, but you could pay and stay in the park until 10pm. We saw a beautiful sunset.

Nice boardwalk around the shallow lake and marsh - good for a stroll
A well maintained State Park, part of the World Birding Center in the RGV. Not overwhelming, but makes for a nice stroll through a marsh. There is a very nice shaded area by the visitor center where you can look over the shallow lake to see some birds.

    Easy walking
This state park is part of the World Birding Center. Admission is $5/adult, children 12 and under are free; buy your ticket at the office window. Due to Covid, the visitor center and gift shop was not open. There were no roving rangers. But you can get a map that shows the trails and there is a board that lets you know of interesting bird sightings. There are several ponds where the birds were plentiful: ibis, egrets, ducks, coots, etc. There is a boardwalk that takes you between several wetlands areas otherwise the trails are crushed stone. We saw several people with walkers that had no trouble on the trails and there are plenty of benches. The area where we saw an Altamira Oriole, Kiskadee and Cardinals was near a neglected campground. Perhaps it was used more pre-Covid. We were lucky enough to see Vermilion Flycatchers. Definitely a great place to watch birds if you take your time. Don’t forget your binoculars, hat and water.
