  4. 4.5 Big Bear Lake (681 reviews)
    - No restrooms but great shops!
Bodies of Water • Hiking Trails • Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Big Bear Lake image
Big bear lake is beautiful and Idyllic town, however bathrooms can be very scarce. No one really offers Public restrooms so it is something that you should keep in mind. Also this was a last minute trip so I prepared to pay a lot for a hotel and lodging. But in general this is a place you want to book early because it does fill up very quickly especially in the winter time and especially around holidays. To give you an example of what the prices were ranging in December 2021 I paid $800 for a Motel six. That was for two nights well other hotels were averaging $3000 for two nights. Amazing little local shops are great including the fact that they have a lot of tire repair facilities around because my tire pressure was low coming up from Chula Vista where the temperature was much warmer. 16. 4.0 Mountain High Resort (63 reviews)
    - Small and simple.
    Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Mountain High Resort image
Night skiing at mountain high was such fun but the resort if very small. If you are travelling from abroad you might have issues as the systems in place only recognise US post codes and phone numbers. The mountain itself was small and steep in places. If you are a just getting comfortable on Red runs then you might find yourself stuck on a couple of rubs that aren’t very long. The 2 2person chairs were painfully slow and lack a lap bar or foot rest. This is a pain with snowboards. The runs themselves were well maintained apart from an really icy area at the bottom run close to the 4 person chair. The staff in resort were super helpful as we struggled with admin due to not having a US address and the credit card machines not being chip and pin friendly. To improve I would recommend changing the POS system so people don’t have to hand over their C/card and instead allow them to enter their pin details. If you are planning a trip around mountain high then. You might be disappointed especially if you’re are mile muncher. If you’re looking for a day on the slopes then this is worth a visit. The price is steeper than a churches tower and wouldn’t fly in Europe for the amount of runs. However these prices are in line with other North American ski resorts. Would I go again if in LA? Probably yes. But that would be more for the love of skiing than the value or size of the resort. See more..

Brought a group of teenagers here and they loved it. They went sledding. Make a reservation online. Parking is chaotic. They provide the saucers, you cannot use your own. Hill gets icier in the afternoon. There is a house to warm us and get a hot chocolate or hot spiced wine. There are some chairs for observers, but if you have some in your car, bring your own. Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center image
Came here on a Friday around 2pm to go snowshoeing with three other friends, and didn’t have any reservation. We opted to get the rentals, which note that you don’t need to get a pass (as that’s for the cross country skiers). For the afternoon package, it’s $35 for the snowshoes and you can get poles for balance as well. Free parking is available in the front. The paths were clearly delineated on a map, although the employee who helped us said that we could go off-road as well. When we went to the trail, we tried to go on the shorter one that went through the forest, but somehow just kept going on the longer one that went around the lake. It was still a fun experience, we just got a longer workout than expected (which trust me, it’s definitely a full body workout). Be sure to bring sunglasses and water, since the snow made everything super bright and you gotta protect your eyes! SPF is a must as well. See more..

    Leland Snowplay image
We arrived just before opening time (10am), bought tickets and went in. The place was not too crowded which was great, queue line waiting for less than 5 minutes. Weather was super great, sun was out and it wasn't too cold. We went up and down multiple times and it was real fun. There are young kids slopes and older kids slopes. Later the kids enjoyed building a snow man and just playing around in the snow. We spent 4 hours. Really recommend visiting with kids all ages. We'll be back! See more..
  26. 4.5 Hope Valley Outdoors (18 reviews)
    - Great place to rent x-c skis
    Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Hope Valley Outdoors image
We wanted to rent skis for a couple of days because we were staying nearby. The people at Hope Valley Outdoors could not have been more helpful. We have long skinny feet that are hard to fit, and they let us try on just about every boot on their shelves until we found boots that fit comfortably. They fitted our skis and poles quickly so we could get out and enjoy the snow. They gave us recommendations for trails to try nearby and allowed us to take the skis offsite. They even gave us a break on the already reasonable price for the second day. I highly recommend them. Be aware that they take cash only, because they have no wifi, so make sure you visit an ATM beforehand! See more..

  29. 3.5 Mt. Waterman Ski Resort (7 reviews)
    - real advanced ski terrain in socal
    Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Mt. Waterman Ski Resort image
Now that I've skied at this resort there are only two ski resorts in socal for those looking for off piste and advanced skiing that would be mt baldy and this place mt waterman. Both places depend on natural snow to be able to open. The drive up to the resort on hwy 2 is pretty easy mountain driving but alot of twists and will have to watch out for the motorcyclist who enjoy riding this road. The runs are short here, but the trees are very wide apart so you can make your own ski run. I would suggest getting an early start here because the parking lot is very small also there is no lodge here so bring your own equipment and either dress ahead of time or change in the car. The advanced terrain is steep here in fact it reminded me of snowbird, ut. See more..
  30. 3.5 Alta Sierra Ski Resort & Terrain Park (5 reviews)
    - Perfect beginner mountain

  31. 5.0 Rim Nordic Cross Country Ski Center (4 reviews)
    - Snowshoeing and X-Country Skiing

Rim Nordic Cross Country Ski Center image
My family and I were staying in Arrowhead and drove about 30 min (the road conditions required chains, so it was slow going) to Rim Nordic on New Years Day. Rental and trail access ($38 per person) included snowshoes AND cross country skis. The boots were nice - with a panel that covered the laces to prevent snow from getting in. We had an awesome time snowshoeing and then trying out XC skiing. As it had snowed the night before, fresh powder covered the trails. We were the only ones out there snowshoeing and blazing our own trail (snowshoe trails are intentionally left ungroomed so you can trail-blaze). The XC trails were nicely groomed. I highly recommend it. Only con: there are porta-potties rather than permanent bathrooms on site. See more..
