Los Angeles Union Station is the main railroad station in Los Angeles, California, and the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western US. Union Station is a major transportation hub for Southern California, serving almost 110,000 passengers a day. The station is the hub of the Amtrak's California regional routes, Amtrak's long distance trains, Metrolink commuter trains, several Metro Rail subway and light rail lines, buses and coach services. History: Established in 1939. Built in 1939, Union Station combines Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, Mission Revival and Streamline Moderne styles. The architecture team included John and Donald Parkinson who also designed Los Angeles City Hall and other city landmarks. Originally intended as a transcontinental terminus station for the Union Pacific, Santa Fe and Southern Pacific Railways, the station was a major hub for troop movement during World War II. The station's historic 161,000 square foot terminal was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and the station was restored in 1992. Beginning in the 1970s, growing use of Amtrak and expansion of local and regional rail revitalized the station as a major transportation hub of Southern California. Metro acquired the station in 2011, managing the property that currently serves as a transportation hub for Metro, Metrolink, Amtrak and other transportation services as well an urban mixed-use development site.See more..

4.5Ahwahnee Historic Building(431 reviews) - Premier Lodging within a National Park Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
This is one of those historic NPS hotel that invokes both majesty of the location as well as the historic setting. It is an incredible and unique hotel set in an amazing setting. The exterior appears that it was carved out of the granite cliffs while the interior displays a size and scale of a glorious time past before technology made the world small. In today's world of tourism, grand public spaces like lobby's and retail areas are gone. However, here is a hotel that is as expansive as the valley itself. We stayed here one night and enjoyed it greatly. We also ate lunch and dinner at the restaurant which is just as amazing. While expensive, it is so nice to stay in the park and to enjoy its amazing amenities like a medieval banquet size fireplace. Again, I can not say enough great things about our stay here. It is simply one of the premier stays in the National Park system.See more..

4.5Downtown Coronado(47 reviews) - Wishing this was "my" downtown! Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Scenic Walking Areas
From the Hotel Del, down Orange Avenue (until hitting the large green expanse of park) is the heart of Coronado's Downtown stretch. The architecture is an eclectic mix of Art Deco and quirky store fronts as well as little holes in the wall (like High Tide Bottle shop that makes he BEST pizza in all of Coronado!) are a visual treat. Think ice cream for the eye balls, that is how fun it is! In the general area can be found Baum's historic home where some of the Oz books were written (a must-see to walk by as these people living here have a sense of humor) and there is also a round-about monument to military sacrifices, lovely old homes, and all the vitality of a lively downtown area.See more..
4.5Grand Island Mansion(30 reviews) - Grand Island Mansion, Walnut Grove, Ca. Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
Last December, (2012), we were invited to a wedding that was to be at the Grand Island Mansion in Walnut Grove, Ca. From the time we found the Mansion, we were absolutely amazed at the building, grounds and the service we received. The wedding was an outdoor venue, (thank god the weather complied). The setting was completely "storybook". Later, at the wedding dinner we thoroughly enjoyed the food and service. Later still at the reception, the service coninued through the night. Great job Grand Island Mansion.See more..

4.5Cal Earth Homes(8 reviews) - LOVE THIS PLACE! Friday: Architectural Buildings
LOVE THIS PLACE! Family + small children friendly with TONS of free information about sustainable building & living. I visited at a time in my life where I had very little hope for my future and my health. Within just the first hour of being there, I felt a complete sense of hope, encouragement, wonder, & craving to learn more. I have since volunteered there once and even moved closer so that I can save up and take the courses they offer. I love how open and encouraging everyone is there and how diverse it is each time. I’ve met some of the most amazing people that I am still connected with there who are so helpful and genuinely kind. I was so sad when the city tried to thwart their efforts by closing them down temporarily due to minor issues with fire access but so so happy they were able to raise enough to reopen! I can’t wait to go back and bring more of my friends & family!See more..

...around the big pagoda a few times and left an offering or two nearby the two. I requested some help at both. I feel always really good stumbling into these places. This complex one seems to be in the middle of a state park that took a big real hit with a fire a couple years back. Redwoods!!! But this temple seems to be unscathed - I wish I was leaving... 4.5Boronda Adobe History Center(3 reviews) - National Register of Historic Places: Boronda Adobe History Center Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
We visited the Boronda Adobe History Center. The adobe is on the National Register of Adobes. It is a Monterey Colonial adobe and was built in 1846. It was the home of José Eusebio Boronda, who was the grantee of Rancho Rincon de Sanjon. There is an adobe style bake oven outside the adobe. Also on the property is historic Lagunita School house, which was originally built in 1897. There is also a military exhibit. 4.0The Chimes(2 reviews) - The now haunted former Crescent Bathhouse....... Architectural Buildings
This building has quite the story..... and it is truly a lovely building. In the late 1800's a little town called Lake Elsinore opened an incredibly lavish public bathhouse where sulfur water bubbled up from the earth to fill its bathtubs. The place was a hit from day one, as most folks back then did not have indoor plumbing. It was also the place to 'meet and greet', and to be seen and cleaned. Over time, people could afford their own lavish bath fixtures and the bathhouse fell out of favor and closed by 1950. Chime's Antiques and Collectibles took residence, and they and their customers started seeing ghosts. Most reported sightings of ghosts including Gloria, a little girl who lost her legs in a car accident and would visit the baths, and a young boy who drowned in the Bathhouse pool. I did feel a certain 'coolness' on this hot day, as I peered into a window, but I did not see anything....See more..

4.5Mono County Courthouse(2 reviews) - A Historic Masterpiece! Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Government Buildings
It's California's second oldest active courthouse. And, although many of Mono County's governmental functions have moved to more populous Mammoth, Bridgeport is still the county seat. And, this is still an active courthouse. Therefore, expect security. And, if court is in session, quiet is expected in the hallways. If you are there while court is in session and you are properly attired. (No shorts, jeans, t-shirts, flip-flops, etc), you are welcome to stay and witness the proceedings, unless it's a closed session.. I especially invite our visitors from other nations to come and see as except in some very exceptional circumstances, all U.S. court proceedings are open to the public. I also recommend being around at the top of the hour or at 30 minutes past to hear the bell tower at work.See more..

4.0Galindo House And Gardens(1 review) - Preserved Local Home Offers Glimpse of Concord History Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings This house is one of the few remaining Victorian ranch homes in Contra Costa County. It's historical connections are substantial; it was built for the daughter of Salvio Pacheco and her husband Don Francisco Galindo. This is a single family Victorian home built in 1856. It is not going to have the cachet of Colonial Williamsburg or the Biltmore Estate, but it is interesting and unique because there were so few families in the area in 1856 who could afford to build homes like this. And fewer homes still that have survived. The interior has been preserved with original artifacts and similar items from the period. Since the house was occupied by the family until 1999, the period aspects of the house continue to demand restoration and attention. The site is generally only open on Sunday afternoons, with docent led tours. During the holiday season, they often add additional hours with holiday decorations. This is an attraction for history and Victoriana buffs. Younger children may be bored. With teens, it depends on the young person's interests. There are stairways and different floors, so accessibility is limited. It is within walking distance (15 minues) of the Concord BART station, and the 320 bus from Concord BART runs about every 45 minutes on Sundays. There is parking in back of the Galindo House and on the street. More parking may be in the works with the development of the Concord Museum and Event Center (CMEC) next door.See more..
