This big expansive beach is gorgeous! The bright white sand and incredible blue hues of the Pacific ocean will almost make you think you're in Hawaii or the Caribbean... ...but in early May the water is still too freezing to actually swim in. From the Hotel Del, down Orange Avenue (until hitting the large green expanse of park) is the heart of Coronado's Downtown stretch. The architecture is an eclectic mix of Art Deco and quirky store fronts as well as little holes in the wall (like High Tide Bottle shop that makes he BEST pizza in all of Coronado!) are a visual treat. Think ice cream for the eye balls, that is how fun it is! In the general area can be found Baum's historic home where some of the Oz books were written (a must-see to walk by as these people living here have a sense of humor) and there is also a round-about monument to military sacrifices, lovely old homes, and all the vitality of a lively downtown area. - Trails are a Hidden Gem! Peaceful and well worth the hike
Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails • Scenic Walking Areas
    Ocean Trails Reserve image
The Ocean Trails are truly a hidden gem. We hiked on a sunny winter day and it was still quite lovely, as there had been some recent rain. Certainly well worth the effort and time. It really is not that long a walk, compared to the other trails in the Palos Verdes Peninsula. You get some amazing views, and if you are a golfer, you can watch them hit. But also watch out for stray golf balls! The whole area is so peaceful and relaxing - you can hear the waves against the rocks - amazing... Very relaxing and peaceful hike to go with a date or the family. Listening to the ocean waves crashing onto the shore rocks is very tranquil. The scenic views are breathtaking as well. See more..

    - Beautiful Sand Dunes! You'll need 4WD...
Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Walking Areas
    Ibex Dunes image
This is one of the closest dune complexes to LA but hard to get to. It is hidden from sight by a couple of mountain ranges and the normal roads to get there were washed out in 2016/2017. Not sure if they maintain those roads or not as they are gravel. The road that I used to get in was the long way around and took about an hour. Nothing too hairy but you will need a 4WD high clearance vehicle. I had a Jeep Compass. Entrance road is here 35°45'33.7"N 116°19'23.8"W. off of the 127. From there you'll go West with a left turn here 35°45'37.2"N 116°22'11.7"W. This stretch will take about 30 minutes and then you have another left here 35°42'43.3"N 116°23'39.9"W. You should be able to see the dunes now. Drive another 20 minutes to here 35°41'42.0"N 116°23'36.1"W or close. You'll have to hike a mile to the Dunes. You'll get some great shots if you hike to the top of a tall dune! Good luck! See more..

This is literally across the street from our neighborhood so we walk there almost everyday. Lots of wild lives: small birds, herons, hawks, deers and sometimes coyotes. Stevens Creek meanders through it. Orange blossoms in the spring could be so intoxicating. There is a kids playground in the park. The swimming pools only open during summer and there is a moderate fee to use. We simply love it and consider ourselves lucky to have it so close by. See more..

    Perret Park image
Actually, a very nice little park, with at least a hundred-yard walk to the water’s edge. People walk their dogs and pick up what they do. We met a 35 year resident of the city of Lake Elsinore and she says that people don’t go in the water, especially late in the summer when the water is at its warmest, for fear of the potential of the 'Brain-Eating' Amoeba, Naegleria Fowleri. After a 9 year old child died, Riverside County health officials issued a warning in 2008 for people to use caution when swimming in the lake. The lake is beautiful, but the warning is enough to keep me out of the water. The lake deserves 5 stars, but the potential of deadly parasites dropped my rating to 3. People were fishing at waters edge.... I don’t know...... See more..

The Fall Creek unit of Henry Cowell State Park can be a little tricky to find but it's worth it. Much of the park sits in a ravine-type environment so you have valleys of lush ferns, small creeks and waterfalls and, of course, towering redwoods. You can hike for as little or as long as you want. Be sure to visit the lime kilns and, if possible, the old barrel mill site. Once in a while they offer a docent-led hike through the area and that's a treat. See more..

Boucher Hill Fire Lookout Tower image
The panoramic views from the tower located atop Boucher Hill Summit are breathtakingly beautiful - especially on a clear day - and the knowledge the forest fire lookout volunteers have to share is so interesting. Visiting this important lookout tower is a must. It is historic, fully functioning and located in the Palomar Mountain State Park so it is easy to visit both the fire lookout tower and the Palomar Observatory in the same day as they are close in proximity. There is a very nice observation deck at the towner, which is wheelchair accessible. From there, over 4,500 feet below you can see the beautiful Pauma Valley, and off in the distance Santiago Peak, Cuyamca Peak and, (on a good day) the Pacific Ocean. I loved this hike and I can’t believe that until now, it hasn’t been in TA. It’s one of the largest waterfalls in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park! It’s a well-known hike when visiting the northern area of Kings Canyon, specifically the Cedar Grove Lodge area. The trailhead can be accessed close to the Roads End Permit Station. It’s probably the easiest 8 mile hike I’ve ever done because it’s relatively flat during the first 75% of the hike. We enjoyed the raging river alongside most of the trail, mountains in the distance, high cliffs above, beautiful forest, deer on the path as well as a mama bear and cubs climbing trees! The falls alone don’t compare to Yosemite or Nevada Falls in volume but the entire hike is lovely! See more..

    - Beautiful art arches mark the beginning of the Solana Beach Rail Trail
    Scenic Walking Areas
Solana Beach Coastal Rail Trail image
Begin this walk at the corner of Hwy 101 and Villa De La Valle (across the highway from Dog Park). It's entry is a beautiful arch dedicated to the long and varied history of Solana Beach. The mosaics set into the two arches are such artful, creative depictions spanning original Indians, traveling through its railroad past, and paying homage to all the things that make Solana Beach such a jewel. The trail ends (or actually continues) at the Harbaugh Seaside Trail which overlooks Cardiff and the beach. But there's more! Begin the walk from one end, cross over and continue the walk back along the art installations along Hwy 101's various eclectic shops. It's like a mini-Laguna Beach art walk. The Rail Trail does border the Coaster's tracks and The Cedros Design District on the other side of the railroad tracks. See more..
  42. 4.0 Adams Pack Station (1 review)
    - Historic Station at Good Hiking Spot
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Walking Areas
The pack station is reportedly the last of its kind in the US. Donkeys for rent here take supplies to the cabins located up the canyon from the Chantry Flats area. The station has food, drink, and some basic supplies for cabin-dwellers and hikers. The donkeys are on site, in a pen behind an out building. The pack station is located adjacent to the National Park Service parking lot at Chantry Flats-an Adventure Pass or National Park Pass is required in the Park Service lot, but for a slightly larger fee you can park in the station lot. The hiking is good but the main trail starts down a long, steep road (easy out but a grind back up). This is an interesting spot to see a remnant of history and provides a nice service for cabin dwellers and thirsty hikers. See more..

Mother Miguel Mountain is a 4.4 mile trail and is rated as moderate. During my hike I came across people mountain biking, running, and several dogs (with their owners of course) were also on the trail. Once you get to the top you will have great views of the Bonita, Sweetwater Reservoir, the San Diego bay, the Eastern mountains, rolling hills, all of Chula Vista, San Diego Downtown, Coronado, and Tijuana on a clear day. Note: you will be exposed to the elements so bring water, there's really no shaded area. At the top you will find a pile of rocks that signifies the Summit. I really enjoyed the hike and if you have never hiked before the distance and elevation make it a great starter for those new hikers and enthusiast. See more..
