  7. 5.0 Farm Store at Kellogg Ranch (34 reviews)
    - Farm Store for City Slickers

Farm Store at Kellogg Ranch image
I enjoy visiting this Farm Store because I know the produce is literally farm fresh, but in addition to that, the store has a great selection of specialty gift items and original food items you can't find in many stores, they also have an assortment of honey you can dispense yourself, a garden center to purchase vegetables you can grow yourself, there's an orange grove and in October they have one of the largest pumpkin patch. It's by the Cal Poly campus, surrounded by residential and industry, but the farm is large and makes you feel like your out in the country. It's a nice excursion any season to enjoy and the staff are students from Cal Poly. So in other words it's a feel good place to spend a couple of hours at. See more..

  9. 4.5 Borges Ranch (32 reviews)
    - A Special Place for a Trip Back in Time
    Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Ranches
    Borges Ranch image
My first visit was as a volunteer on Borges Ranch Day this May. The setting is a beautiful, narrow little valley in the foothills of Mount Diablo with access to the many trails of the rugged mountain. The ranch, established in 1903, is a treasure/time capsule. The house and barn introduce you to life on a working cattle ranch for a family with five children. The local 4-H clubs help care for the chickens and goats on the ranch, so it's a great place to bring children. Make sure you bring water (it can be quite warm) and a picnic lunch or snacks. There are no concessions. Next year, plan to visit on Borges Ranch Day when there are food stands, games for the children, a fiddlers' convention, and maybe even a members of the Borges Family, descendants of the original owner, Francisco "Frank" Borges, who will share their family stories with you! 23. 4.5 Reed Valley Ranch (2 reviews)
    - Great Place to Bring Horses and Spend a Weekend
    Ranches
This is a great place to trailer your horses and do some riding--the ranch managers Don and Janet are serious horse people and Don has set up trails for a variety of levels of riding. There is a nice snug bunkhouse close to the horse pens (bring your own bedroll or sleeping bag) as well. Its a working ranch, so there are cattle and other horses in corrals, but there is a round pen and an arena that you can use.. Ask Don about his "playgrounds"--he is a champion cowboy rider so he has set up all sorts of interesting obstacles along the trails for you and your horse to try out: the Texas two-step jumps, small bridges, side pass rails, and the like. Beautiful ranch. There is about a 7 mile dirt road to get to their ranch, but our horse trailer did just fine. Its a good graded dirt road. Bring your own horse feed; the bunkhouse has a microwave and coffee maker and a frig and an outdoor gas grill. See more..
  24. 5.0 Lazy G Bar Ranch (1 review)
Jubilatoire!!!!!

  26. 5.0 Rawhide Ranch (1 review)
    - Fun Horseback Riding Lessons in a Simulated Old West Town
    Ranches
    Rawhide Ranch image
This place is a lot of fun for kids. I brought my two nieces for a horseback riding lesson and there were two attentive and nice teachers who led the horses with a rope. Both nieces are very young, so it could have been nerve-wracking, but they were obviously in good hands. It was all in a very large indoor arena. It can get pretty hot there, so it's nice to have something inside. There are goats and sheep and other animals around. They offer several summer camps and there is even a summer camp for Mother's Day that includes the mom's. The simulated old west town is very charming and the kids absolutely loved it. Total bonus to just horseback riding lessons. They have parking available and the arena is on the right after you've walked through the old west "town" a bit. See more..

In the spring the descendent of the original ranch owners offers a wagon train tour of the ranch along with lunch. The tour was informative about history, nature, and her growing up on the ranch. The tour provides a view of wildflowers that occur in the spring. There is musical entertainment during lunch. It was a wonderful way to spend the day and learn about the area. Highly recommend. Must make reservations ahead of time. I'm surprised that this hasn't been made an Airbnb experience but the popularity is word of mouth. See more..
