    Old Point Loma Lighthouse image
My husband and I love lighthouses so they are always on our must-see list. This one is small but worthwhile to visit. You can see the grounds and learn about how water was collected and stored on the island as well as go into the little keeper's house and the lighthouse itself. The whole park is full of information and history, as well as some of the best views and a lot of birds. The lighthouse is part of the National Park so there is a fee to enter unless you have one of the National Park passes. See more..

Point Arena Lighthouse & Museum image
The Point Arena Lighthouse stands as an iconic figure on the American Pacific Coast. Sometimes brilliantly sunny, other times fog-shrouded and mysterious, always ruggedly beautiful, the Lighthouse is a place to find something different, a place where the romance is real and the experience is profound. Surrounded by water on three sides, and shouldered adjacent to the Point Arena/Stornetta Public Lands, the Point Arena Lighthouse is the premier visitor destination in Mendocino County. Climb to the top of the tallest Lighthouse on the Pacific coast, visit the Light Station Store, Indoor Museum and Outdoor Museum and celebrate our 152nd year! It is also one of the best whale watching spots on the North Coast, with the annual Gray Whale migration from late November through May, Humpbacks throughout the year, the occasional pod of transient Killer Whales and even Blue Whales. Watch for the spouts, tails and breaches from the trails and gazebo. Tower Tours daily! See more..

We had spent time in the nearby Interpretive Center, which also houses the original 1800's lens from France that was used for many years at the lighthouse. It was a nice easy and beautiful walk to the lighthouse from the Center. However, disappointing that you cannot see it, except from a distance. The area is quite nice though, with some green park shade area with picnic tables - great spot to eat. Wonderful views. Quite a bit of history with this lighthouse. See more..

We stayed in one of the private rooms (with shared bath) for a wedding in the area. The hostel staff is very friendly, and the grounds were beautiful. The rooms were very small, but the view more than made up for that. If you're comfortable with hostel style accommodations you won't finder a better view from your bedroom window in this price range. Easy viewing from first floor with Coast Guard giving talk about light house, lens used history. Well planned and interesting. Great exhibits here also. Climbing stairs and then a ladder to the top could be hard and scary for some. Great view from the top and Coast Guard person was there also. Challenging but worth it. See more..
