    Wright field is a small (230 acre) grassland area behind alpine. Not many people come here because even most alpine residents don't know it's there. It's protected by a small group of volunteers called the Back Country Land Trust, who have maintained it as one of the few native californai grasslands left. Best times to visit are in the early morning or evening when the birds are chirping and active. You can wander on any of the numerous paths and just enjoy the peace and tranquility away from the noise of the city. There's no bathrooms, kiosks or signs....just sagebrush, oaks, chaparral and quiet. I have wandered through these field many times and just enjoyed being by myself with my thoughts.     After just a two hour orientation you're ready to say goodbye to civilization and take off into the wilds of the Sierras with some easy to handle, load carrying llamas. They're wonderful companions on the trail...almost always spotting wildlife before you do...pretty stoic about things that would send a horse or mule into orbit. Much cheaper than hiring a packer and best of all you're in charge of your destination and rate of travel. Great for older hikers like me...66...150 miles on the JMT last year with llama support, people with kids or hikers who want to have something left in the tank when they reach their destination!. I'm doing Rae Lakes Loop this year with my brother, nephew and grandnephew...taking a young 3 year old llama along for 'experience'. Put this on your bucket list is you like to get out of doors!
