If you're considering a visit to San Francisco, look no further for the perfect location to see the city as a backdrop to the Golden Gate Bridge. Battery Spencer is a short hike of about 750 feet from the parking area; and parking is super tight - especially on nice days. There is a prison-style bathroom but at least there is one. Photos can be a challenge with all of the tourists so consider hiring a professional. I love this location for post-wedding, engagement, and family photos. See more..
  2. 4.5 Vandenberg Afb (12 reviews)
    - A beautiful base
Spent More than 3 hours Military Bases & Facilities
This is a closed military base where everyone must present a military id card to enter. There are two ways around this. If you have a sponser and with two forms of indetification you can get a pass in the visitor center for that day. Otherwise there is a tour once a month to view the first launch site on base. See the base website for details. If you are lucky enough to get on base it is 100,000 acres of rough beauty. The need for open space for rocket launches lends itself to wide open spaces. The beaches are desolate and wonderful! Everyone can participate in Vandenburgs rocket launches, just possibly not from on base. Night launches are my absolute favorite as the night sky is a great backdrop for the flames of the rocket. The valley intensifies and reverberates the roar of the launch. If you have a chance to see one of these, don't miss it! For those with access to the base, the commissary is not huge but just fine. The BX is small and less than satisfactory. See more..
