  2. 3.5 Calico Ghost Town (1.967 reviews)
    - Calico: Experience a mining town from the 1800's
    Ghost Towns
    Calico Ghost Town image
Visitors from around the world come to Calico each year to experience a real ghost town originally settled in the 1880s.A hive of activity for the adventurous at heart - the park hosts the Mystery Shack- a crooked house where water runs uphill, two museums, narrow-gauge train rides and gold panning.Calico was founded during California’s largest silver strike. The town thrived for 12 years, until the price of silver plunged and mining operations ceased. By 1907, residents had moved away, leaving Calico to the tumbleweeds and spirits.Amenities include group and RV camping, mountain bike trails and off-road vehicle areas, fourteen shops, three restaurants, cabins and bunkhouses. Special events are held year-round, including Civil War re-enactments in February, Spring Festival featuring Americana music, the Calico Days Festival when the town’s rich mining history is celebrated with a burro race, miner’s triathlon, music and more, and let’s not overlook the ever-popular Halloween Ghost Haunt in October. The desert park is just a few miles north of Barstow, and minutes offInterstate 15. Calico Ghost Town is a great place to get a bite to eat and do a little shopping if you’re traveling between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. See more..
  3. 3.5 Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum (644 reviews)
    - Great fun. Lousy venue
Friday: 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM Spent More than 3 hours Arenas & Stadiums
    Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum image
First I had a great time... the crowd was energetic. The A's were playing the Giants so it was one of the largest crowds the stadium has had all year. That said, the stadium, much like Ebbits Field in NY (remember why the Dodgers left NY? ) is a dump, but it's their dump. The lines were very long for everything because the staff was unprepared for 3 to 4 times the average attendance. Even the mobile order system was woefully slow because they aren't accustomed to that much volume. the bathroom lines were long and by the end of the game the floors were disgusting. Don't wear nice shoes! Parking was $30 -- we were staying on the BART line, but after noting that the trains were very infrequent we bit the bullet, drove, and payed for parking. See more..

  5. 3.5 Old Town Eureka (491 reviews)
    - Don't Drive - Hoof it!
Friday: 10:30 AM - 5:30 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Old Town Eureka image
The bad news is Covid-19 has made Old Town Eureka a little shy of a ghost town ... but the silver lining is how wonderful it is to simply walk and have the streets of old town Eureka to yourself. It is very peaceful and at the same time a little melancholic and somber. The contrasts between the old buildings and the modern murals is palatable and would often stop us in our tracts. Its a strangely beautiful mix of old and new. Eureka is an amazing town. In spite of all this Covid related depression, the community optimism won't be squelched. Not everything is closed. There are some excellent places to eat too, from Jack's on the water front (do not miss the halibut fish n chips) to Five-Eleven. Many places have drive up / food pick up and other seat, but reservations are recommended. I wouldn't walk around old town at night, but the sun doesn't set till 9pm these days and we felt very safe. Chumash Casino image
My wife and I go to the Chumash Casino about once every couple of months...it is the closest casino to our home. We have sometimes won big and sometimes lost our shirts but usually walk out even or maybe with a small loss which is reasonable for several hours of entertainment. There is a wide variety of slots and table games, and they have bingo periodically. They have frequent shows and concerts though the venue itself is pretty rudimentary. The buffet is adequate and they also have a cafe and food court. The players club gives you $5 free play every month. There are also regular car giveaways and other such promotions. This is a nice good-sized local casino that draws from the Ventura-Paso Robles area with buses available from several towns. As of this writing (3/18/20) they are closed due to the coronavirus thing but should re-open soon then we will be back! See more..

    Shoreline Amphitheatre image
With the new COVID precautions, we were not allowed to bring in any chairs or any bags that were not clear or were bigger than a 4"x6" purse. Chairs are available to rent on site for people in general admission. We were able to set up on the lawn in front of the big screens so got a pretty good view of the band members, just at the mercy of the cameraman. Only bad thing if you want to see the stage from the lawn is the people standing at the barrier in front of the seat area during the entire show. The sound is excellent and the parking well-organized. We enjoy coming here. See more..

    - Wonderful place to visit and spend some time
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Telegraph Avenue image
Almost as if we haven't lost a moment of time... Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley is still so reminiscent of the 60's that you will feel as if you have traveled back in time when you visit Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. The shops and eateries are a mix of quintessential hippie-dom mixed with the current U.C. Berkeley modern day student. Both seem to blend together in a medley that makes shopping and eating here almost a cultural or historical trek as well as a great shopping one. See more..

    River Fox Train image
We’ve done the magical cmas train with our grandkids for 5 yrs with a bump during COV. It’s sort of cheesy but in a good way. This year seemed to lack energy and enthusiasm. There was no storyline where “actors” came thru the cabins with a story for kids to engage. When we got to the turnaround spot, there was no North Pole or anything, the train just reversed direction. Santa looked the part but lacked Christmas spirit. The singer (some laid back hippie) was just going thru the motions. Mrs claus and elves were great in engaging the audience and making an effort in giving something for $55 tixs. Was disappointed this year so will try the Polar Express downtown old sac next time. Lake Casitas Recreation Area image
My husband and I checked in on a Tuesday and the park was super quiet. Beautiful lake but our site was not overlooking water. Our pad was dirt and was level. We have plenty of space but this site (B21) only had water and electric; did not have sewer hook up but there is a dump station nearby. of course there are sites that have full hook up. The park is beautiful and clean, great walking area, and perfect location for exploring Ojai, Ventura, and Carpenteria. Scenery is spectacular, cool to hear all the birds, staff very attentive. Very popular with boaters and fisherman. Our visit was Tuesday to Sunday and even though it was fully booked over the weekend and noisier than during the week, it was kind of nice to have the background noise of families having a great time. They have boat rentals available and a little café as well as a park store. Every site has a picnic table and a fire pit. We loved it! For us, this is a gorgeous portion of California. See more..

So this place gets three stars because once you're in the venue it's a great experience. However, getting into the venue is probably going to cause you a few headaches. If you're coming from San Diego via rideshare- come early with a cooler and hang out outside the venue- at least then you can decide when to go in. If you try to arrive at the show start time- expect to miss some of the show. If you are driving- get there early and "tailgate" your event. This gives yourself time to wait in the extensive line to find a parking spot. In all pay attention to the line at the gate- there seem to be a very limited number of entrances causing lines to build quickly! See more..

Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area image
IMHO this is the nicest lake in the LA metropolitan area. Nestled in the San Bernardino mountains at around 4,000 feet, you have great vistas of high peaks, sometimes with snow. The water is clean and the fishing can be terrific. (Or not.) Given the lake's elevation and cooler temps, it can sometimes produce good fishing during the summer doldrums when other local lakes are dead or overrun with skiers and PWCs. We thought the facilities, staff and rental boat were quite good (it's a California State Park, after all). This lake is ideal for fishing, boating, watersports, cruising and relaxing. It can be good for kayaking or paddlesports but subject to high winds, especially in afternoon. At the time of my visit, lake level was down but not horribly so. A lot of negative reviews on here. I would add as a cautionary note that we visited on a quiet weekday in late spring and didn't overnight camp. I would expect an entirely different experience on a holiday weekend. See more..

The place is nice the room was clean and very comfortable. The casino wasn't very smoky and slots a little tight. The only problem I have with Pala is the checking process. When I make my reservation I was asked what time I would be arriving I gave the my expect arrival time. I did get there around the time I told them I would be arriving when to check in and was told that check in was at 4PM. My question why ask for arrival time if they are not going to have room available. It's seem that the staff at the check in desk do really care and don't offer any help. When I ask if they would call me when a room was available she said they don't do that, maybe it something that they should start just like Harrahs and Pechanga do. They check you in no matter what time you get there and they will call you cell phone as soon as your room is available. I have arrive as early as 10AM and in my room by noon. See more..

  48. 3.5 Bay Street (68 reviews)
    - Nice to walk outside but not many unique stores
Spent < 1 hour Neighborhoods • Shopping Malls
    Bay Street image
I prefer outdoor malls such as this one and I’m not a big shopper but there are not that many stores in this mall so it didn’t take long to stroll up one side and down the other. It’s nice to walk outside in between stores. They have the Apple store, Victoria Secret, Bath and Body, a bookstore, typical clothing stores, a couple of furniture stores, Victoria Secret, etc... there are just a handful of unique stores like one selling African goods which I enjoyed. There are a few restaurants to choose from but again nothing super exciting. There is an AMC theater which anchors one end of the mall. Be prepared to pay for parking in the multi story garage. We were in town visiting friends, and decided to do a little after Christmas bargain shopping...these outlets NEVER disappoint. They have added sitting areas that made the experience nicer for those, who "needed a rest." See more..

    - Eh, unless you are a true Smpson’s fan
    Bars & Clubs
    Moe's Tavern image
Food is very, very expensive and is eh and very little seating areas to find a place to sit and eat. For beer drinkers would recommend trying it at least once to have a Duff beer, though it is very pricey as well for the beer. See more..
