- 5.0 The Strand Theatre (99 reviews)
-Best Movie Theater Anywhere
Movie Theaters
I always stop to see a few shows at the Strand when vacationing in Old Forge. Early in the week my wife and I saw a movie and decided later in the week to go to the Leon Etienne magic show. The show was amazing and was like going to a show in Las Vegas. Leon has performed all over the world and he has been doing shows throughout the summer in Old Forge. The owners Bob and Helen are real nice and will thank you for visiting their theater at the end of the show. See more..
- 5.0 Adirondack River Outfitters (99 reviews)
-Rafter Heaven!
River Rafting & Tubing
My husband, adult son & I had a fabulous trip on the Black River this morning! We lucked out that the temperature was warm & the water was high. Our guide, Stevie was competent, a good communicator & teacher, and sprinkled in bits of history & local lore during the short breaks in the raging water. We have been rafting in Colorado several times and were surprised to find this gem in our backyard. The staff made us all comfortable & I felt like the whole experience was well orchestrated from time of booking. The snack & water were welcome at the portage & the tow ride & beer to toast at the end were icing on the cake. See more..

- 5.0 Whitewater Challengers - Black River (93 reviews)
-Fun, exciting, and safe
River Rafting & Tubing
What a blast! We had so much fun from the time we got there to the time we got off the boat. There were great rapids which our wonderful guide Eric expertly navigated and “surfed” with us. We also got to go cliff jumping and swimming while on the route. We felt very safe with Eric. Also, Eric and the rest of the staff joked around with us and made us feel comfortable and like we had been part of the Whitewater Challengers group for ages. We passed a few rafts from other companies while on the River and it seemed like this company was the most competent. Highly recommend. See more..

It’s hard to believe that this beautiful, quiet environment is located just off a state road. Once you enter the Wolf Conservative Center, you are immersed in this private little forest. Actually, it’s not that little since there are acres of property designated as wolf enclosures. We enjoyed seeing the Ambassador wolves up close and found the presentation to be very informative. Perhaps because the weather was a little cool on the day of our visit, the wolves were active and we were able to see the Red Wolves and Mexican Gray Wolves walking around in their enclosures. Such beautiful animals! The entire staff was so friendly and helpful from the time we parked, throughout the tour and in the gift shop on our way out. We would definitely recommend visiting the Wolf Conservation Center. See more..

We stayed at Frontier Town State Park and Schroon Lake was very nearby. It seemed to be a bustling little town, very nice residents and plenty to keep them busy. We did go in to grocery shop and do our laundry as well as finding a great coffee shop. While waiting on laundry we walked across the street to the town's park. It had an awesome memorial to all Schroon Lake Veterans dating back to the American Revolutionary War up to current. The lake is beautiful and there's a nice beachfront for adults/kids to enjoy swimming or sunbathing. There's also a marina there. Looks like a quaint, peaceful place with activities throughout the town for residents. See more..

-Great paddle in the Hudson and interesting tour of Bannerman Castle on Pollepel Island!
Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Kayaking & Canoeing
I thought the paddle led by Storm King Adventure Tours from Cornwall to Bannerman was awesome! It got very windy which made it quite challenging, which I didn’t mind at all, but I felt badly for inexperienced paddlers. However, the guides were very capable in making sure everyone was safe. The tour guide on the island was very knowledgeable and informative. I enjoyed going in the old residence/museum and seeing original pictures and artifacts. The gardens were lovely, though with this awfully dry summer they were not at their best. See more..
- 5.0 Above the Clouds (65 reviews)
-Flying High
Balloon Rides
I want to give a shoutout to Chris and Deanna and their whole crew at Above the Clouds Hot Air Balloon Rides for helping me celebrate my 75th in high fashion. The balloons are full of hot air, Chris and Deanna definitely are not. From the time I signed up they kept me informed; their instructions were concise and humorous; and they kept their promise that the flight would be a wonderful adventure. On the ground, as the crew prepared (inflated) the balloons, Deanna reviewed what we needed to know and do and did a Stand up routine to keep any of the Nervous Nellies relaxed. My friend and I had the good fortune to be in Chris’ gondola (the proper name for the basket) as she piloted us over beautiful landscapes and doled out tidbits of history, geography and geology of the region. The ascent (we are now all Ascended Beings) and descent were smooth and Deanna kept us laughing in the ride back to Randall Airport. A beautiful experience See more..

- 5.0 Oakwood Cemetery (62 reviews)
-Beautiful Park-like, Historic, Resting Place of Uncle Sam
Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM Cemeteries
My sister told me about this cemetery after seeing their website. We took a day and drove nearly 2 hours to tour it. They are very welcoming and the man in the office was more than happy to provide a guide map of the cemetery. There was a beautiful bluff overlooking the river valley as well as 2 waterfalls, lakes, and historic monuments. The stones, mausolea, roads, landscaping, and sculptures were awesome. They had a nice chapel in the middle of the cemetery which was closed but structurally impressive as well as a huge chapel and crematorium near one of the entrances. The resting place of "Uncle Sam" Wilson who provided meat to soldiers in I believe, the War of 1812 is in this cemetery. He stamped "U.S" on the crates and the soldiers said they got a shipment from "Uncle Sam" They offer tours too here and we plan to go. Check out their website. Visiting is free but the tours have a nominal cost. See more..

- 5.0 Wilder Homestead (57 reviews)
-A Wilder Time!
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Historic Sites
With the uncertainty of COVID Summer Part II, the family opted to take a shorter-than-usual trip to New York. Either my wife or I worked out that the Farmer Boy Farm was in New York, so we made the ridiculously long drive with our four kids (aged 9 and younger!) up to a few miles from the Canada border. Was here as the office opened. Took a little while for the tour to get put together, but was well worth the wait. Kids enjoyed seeing all the places in the book that they'd read about. Tour guide was very interesting and informative. Inside the house, I enjoyed that they found the ink blots on the wall when they redid where Alonzo ruined the wall and his sister covered for him. I'd never read any of the Laura Ingels Wilder books until I read them to my kids this past year, but it was worth the drive to almost Canada to visit this spot, even if the rest of our trip was hours and hours away. Kids loved it. See more..

Today we landed 13 or 14 fish before 11am and our first 9-10 were caught before 10am. We did use another charter captain a few years back (Joe was booked) and he was a bit of a curmudgeon and nowhere near the fisherman Joe is. -Worth the Effort of the Hike
Spent 2-3 hours Hiking Trails
My wife and I started the Tupper Lake Triad by hiking the Coney Mountain Trail. It took us about an hour to get to the top of the mountain. It is not a difficult hike, but I would recommend good hiking boots. I am very overweight and 59 years old and was able to make it to the top. People who are in better shape probably will take half the time. Once at the top, the views are gorgeous. Plan to time just to sit and enjoy the views. If it is a rainy day, the trail will be slippery in spots. Hiking poles will be helpful but not required. We saw several families with dogs and younger children.
