    - Great place to stop in Buffalo

Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park image
We only had a short time on our stopover in Buffalo, and this is one of the places we visited. We didn't tour the ships, but it was still a great experience to read about some of the history and see the ships (and some aircraft) up close and personal. On-street parking at the meters is affordably priced and the walk along the water is beautiful. Just 4 minutes' drive down the road is the Erie Basin Marina that has a small beach area and an observation tower for a great view of the lake. This is a stop you can make as long or as short as you want, depending on if you choose to tour the boats or just walk the park. Other than parking, there's no cost to visit the park. See more..
  2. 4.0 Fort Putnam (5 reviews)

    Fort Putnam image
We toured Fort Putnam to get a true understanding of the Revolutionary war. The outdoor fort is not ADA accessible. This is a great example of the forts that protected the colonists during the Revolutionary War. The site is complete with cannons, a small indoor exhibit, as well as, the rudimentary walls. The site has a number of crank audio recordings to better understand the workings of the fort. This is an off the path historical site that provides some beautiful views of the Hudson Valley. There are no restroom accommodates, and the stairs and paths can be difficult to navigate in slippery conditions. See more..
  3. 5.0 Air National Guard 109th Airlift Wing (1 review)
    - Amazing air national guard base - good tour!

The 109th Airlift Wing employs the Department of Defense's only ski-equipped aircraft to conduct operations in remote Polar Regions. From April 1- August 31 each year the base offers tours to civilians and we were lucky enough to visit last week. You can call to make a plan to visit and you must have ten people to take the tour. We were able to see a C-130 ski bird in the hangar and get to climb on board and check it out. There are some very cool photographs in the hallway showing the aircraft and the crew down at McMurdo station in Antarctica where they go each year to take supplies, researchers and support staff as part of Operation Deep Freeze. Amazingly this mission has been ongoing for 30 years! Kudos to the airmen who take part in this fantastic operation each year. Fascinating especially since we had recently watched an Anthony Bourdain show on TV where he had visited there himself! See more..
