    History Museums
Boldt Castle and Yacht House image
A visit to the magnificent Boldt Castle offers a glimpse into one of the most compelling love stories in history. At the turn-of-the-century, George C. Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the world-famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC, set out to build a full-sized Rhineland Castle in Alexandria Bay, on Heart Island. The grandiose structure was to be a display of his love for his wife, Louise. Beginning in 1900, Boldt's family shared four summers on Wellesley Island while 300 workers, stonemasons, carpenters and artists fashioned the six story, 120-room castle, complete with tunnels, a powerhouse, Italian gardens, a drawbridge and a dovecote. In 1904, tragedy struck. Boldt telegrammed the island and commanded the workers to immediately "stop all construction." Louise had died suddenly. A broken-hearted Boldt could not imagine his dream castle without his beloved. Three hundred workers laid down their tools. Boldt never returned, leaving behind the structure as a monument of his love. See more..

    Hudson River Maritime Museum image
We took a lighthouse tour on the Solaris that was so brilliant we booked another one! The first trip took us out to the Rondout Lighthouse. The boat trip itself was beautiful, and our guides were friendly, funny and knowledgeable about the river's history. Their love of the region & for the environment was palpable. Next, we went on an early morning birding tour with an expert who lent us his fancy specialist binoculars. We saw bald eagles, ospreys, cormorants, blue herons, and many more. Booking a tour on the Solaris means you get free entry to the spellbinding Museum, and we ended up spending the whole day. The boat tour changed what I thought about the river in general and lighthouse living in particular. I didn't realize that little slice of water had so much history, and such environmental significance. Frankly, I think the price is a real bargain, as you get hours of entertainment and a unique experience. Highly recommend. See more..

    Audubon Community Nature Center image
There is something for almost anyone at the Audubon Community Nature Center. Hike six miles of trails through forests and wetlands, visit a live Bald Eagle, or enjoy having a picnic and playing in the Nature Play Area. There are play areas, live animals, a gift shop and a wildlife viewing area inside the Nature Center, while outside there are also gardens, a native tree arboretum, picnic pavilions, towers and more. Visit the website to learn what programs might be happening while you are there! See more..

The museum in the old stone fort is 130 years old and seems to have had a consistent philosophy during its existence - if someone wants to donate it, we're happy to display it. The items in the old fashioned glass cases cover the ancient rocks through a recent hurricane damage and give glimpses into every facet of the surrounding area. Some of the historic materials are amazing - old letters from prominent Revolutionary War figures are a real treat to see. Some of the other exhibits take an enthusiast to appreciate ( there are a lot of rocks and arrowheads that, to an untrained eye, look much the same). All together it is charming and informative. Though we came without kids we did see several families happily engaged in a treasure hunt through the museum with the kids filling out a sheet of items they had searched for. Often a museum like this is dull to children but these kids seemed very engaged. One lack we felt was in an exhibit that told the story of the church itself and the dramatic events of the raids on Schoharie during the Revolutionary War when it was used as a place of shelter during raids. Still, the museum is well worth a visit. See more..

Do this museum in conjunction with the laboratory museum to gain a better understanding of how tuberculosis and the search for a cute helped shape Saranac lake in the late 1800’s . This museum contains fascinating well preserved and authentic artifacts from the time Robert L. stevenson spent in Saranac Lake searching for a cure for his lung ailment. The caretaker/ guide is a wealth of information and it was totally enjoyable! Well worth a visit. I do so hope it continues to be preserved! See more..

An amazing museum about all things related to slate. While the written exhibits are rather dense, you don’t have to digest them all to have an informative and educational time. I especially enjoyed learning about different slate colors and modern applications. See more..
