The Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse is a 19th-century building that served as a local single-room public school into the 1940s. Recently awarded a 'Legends & Lore' marker by the New York Folklore Society & William G. Pomeroy Foundation honoring Washington Irving's "Sleepy Hollow" character 'Ichabod Crane', who was patterned after the original Kinderhook Schoolteacher, Jesse Merwin--hence the schoolhouse name. Washington Irving was a friend of President Martin Van Buren and boarded at the Van Ness home in Kinderhook for about eight weeks in 1809 after the death of his fiancée. Schoolteacher, Jesse Merwin, was also a boarder at the Van Ness home, and the two twenty-something bachelors went fishing and otherwise socialized with the small colony of intellectuals in the otherwise agrarian community. Lockport's Lowertown Historic District is on the National Historic Register of historic places and is roughly bounded to the north by the Erie Canal and to the south and southwest by the Niagara Escarpment. The area is mostly residential with many fine elegant brick and stone homes, and was considered the social, commercial and industrial center of the city in the period of 1829-1870. It had been called "a village within a city" and most of the early aristocracy of the city lived there. Lowertown has one of the finest concentrations of early 19th century brick and stone architecture surviving in the state. There are many historic buildings, among them the Washington Hunt House(c.1831) and the Lockport Bank Building(c.1829). My father grew up 2 blocks from Lowertown and when we would visit my grandparents every summer we would take that short walk down the Escarpement to Lowertown to see the area and fish in the Erie Canal. Having just returned from Lockport and visiting Lowertown, we noticed some of the structures could use a little attention. The city needs to promote this gem and with it's close proxcimity to the famous Lockport locks and popular caves and underground boat rides,it would make an excellent tie in. See more..
