If your tripping to Central NY, a must for adventure and education is Herkimer Diamond Mines. There are many facets to a great time for adults and young adults although I did see some tots also. A person can rent a sledge hammer and experience knocking out these beautiful crystals. A genuine treat was Gordon, a college student with endless knowledge about geology and fossils. You can purchase these diamonds at the gift shop and the food at the snack bar was delicious and reasonably priced. All staff members know their subject are super friendly. I plan to return next summer season to take advantage of the camp grounds.See more..

4.5Marist College(95 reviews) - Campus Tour Educational sites
Beautiful campus on the Hudson River. I visited with my daughter as she is a senior in high school. Our tour guide was excellent and gave us a complete tour of the campus even though we could not enter any of the buildings. The campus is laid out well with pathways and lots of well maintained greenery. The campus is right off Rt 9 so there is some traffic noise but it's not disturbing at all. Marist has a great academic program and all the staff and students that we met were helpful, cordial and nice to deal with during our short stay. I would highly recommend a visit to Marist College for folks that are in the area or if you daughter or son has any interest in attending this school.See more..

4.0Old Stone Fort(39 reviews) - Interesting assemblage of old items in an historic church Temporarily closed - Closed until May 1, 2023 Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Battlefields • Educational sites • History Museums • Churches & Cathedrals
The museum in the old stone fort is 130 years old and seems to have had a consistent philosophy during its existence - if someone wants to donate it, we're happy to display it. The items in the old fashioned glass cases cover the ancient rocks through a recent hurricane damage and give glimpses into every facet of the surrounding area. Some of the historic materials are amazing - old letters from prominent Revolutionary War figures are a real treat to see. Some of the other exhibits take an enthusiast to appreciate ( there are a lot of rocks and arrowheads that, to an untrained eye, look much the same). All together it is charming and informative. Though we came without kids we did see several families happily engaged in a treasure hunt through the museum with the kids filling out a sheet of items they had searched for. Often a museum like this is dull to children but these kids seemed very engaged. One lack we felt was in an exhibit that told the story of the church itself and the dramatic events of the raids on Schoharie during the Revolutionary War when it was used as a place of shelter during raids. Still, the museum is well worth a visit.See more..
