  1. 4.5 Yarra River (1.691 reviews)
    - Many different aspects
    Bodies of Water
    Yarra River image
The Yarra River’s journey begins on the southern slopes of the Great Dividing Range and twists through the forested valleys of the Yarra Ranges and its quaint regional towns before concluding its journey on the muddy flats of Port Phillip Bay. Elemental to Melbourne’s identity, the Yarra River is one of Victoria’s iconic waterways. It has spiritual and cultural significance for Aboriginal communities. To the Wurundjeri people the river, known as Birrarung, was the life source and an important meeting place. And, to many locals, where happy memories of personal pilgrimages, peaceful summer evenings, and days exploring were made. Board one of the river cruises from Southbank to explore the lower reaches of the Yarra, follow the Capital City Trail on foot or bike, canoe or kayak all or part of its 240-kilometre expanse, or set up for a scenic sunset barbecue or picnic on the banks of the river. Bodies of Water
    Lake Daylesford image
My wife and I attended an event called "Borealis on The Lake" held at Lake Daylesford, during our recent holiday in Daylesford, where we stayed for two nights. Tickets are $20 per person. Coined ‘Borealis on the Lake’, the immersive outdoor art installation will beam lasers over Daylesford Lake to recreate the natural phenomenon of the northern lights. Created by Switzerland-based artist Dan Archer, the captivating display runs every Thursday to Sunday from 15 July – 4 September 2022. It is an interesting display of technology. A minor negative is the dull and monotonous music that was played in a loop during the show. See more..
  4. 5.0 Bay of Islands (691 reviews)
    - Worth a stop!
Sunday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Bodies of Water
    Bay of Islands image
A land and seascape sculpted by the elements over millennia. Arches, islands and rock stacks are dotted along a wild coastline of beach coves and spectacular lookouts. The wild Southern Ocean has carved a stunning collection of rock stacks and sheltered bays with clifftop walks, scenic lookouts and small beach coves near Peterborough along the Great Ocean Road. Perhaps overshadowed by the Port Campbell and the Twelve Apostles down the road, the Bay of Islands Coastal Park offers just equally spectacular experience without the crowds. Dogs are welcome on a lead at Sandy Cove near Murnanes Bay. See more..

The Bay of Martyrs itself is 2.5 kilometres long and inside the bay there are two smaller bays; Crofts Bay and Massacre Bay. This lookout can be accessed by all as it is wheelchair accessible. The lookout offers breathtaking views. There are great opportunities along the coast here for those who are serious photographers...( I am more of a point and shoot person) but I can imagine what a serious photographer could achieve. It is stunning and well worth stopping to look at this view. See more..

    - Still beautiful

    Lake Tyrrell image
It was windy and intermittently rainy while there this arvo but still a lovely time Much of the walk to the point is underwater now as is the viewing platform We drove all the way to the end A local farmer described it as just a stinky lake but no smells today because of the wind. No real overt pinkness all around neither - wind, cloud, high water levels have all seen to that. There were moments though when wind died off or we viewed spots of the lake from a different angle that we could see pink. Or maybe our eyes were playing tricks on us! We stayed a good couple of hours absorbing it all and thoroughly enjoyed the changing landscape around us as the rain, sun and wind came and went. I did like seeing the lunettes too Also not another soul in sight while there. The lady at the info centre advised seeing it in January at sunset on a sunny day for the more picture perfect moments See more..
  12. 4.0 Emerald Lake (114 reviews)
    - Worth a visit
    Bodies of Water
    Emerald Lake image
Just a nice park to visit and a walk around the lake is mandatory. There are ducks and water hens and areas for kids to play. Some of the banks on the lake have been fenced off where they have disappeared. There is a section of fence in the water at the bottom of the lake so hopefully that will be removed at some stage. Certainly not as crowded as it was pre pandemic but school holidays are coming. The parking ticket machines are operational again so don't forget your credit card because they do not take cash. Parking is a reasonable $2 for 2 hours or $6 all day - the ticket machines need clear instructions getting an all day ticket is not intuitive. See more..

    Lake Benalla Walking Track image
The first time I walked around this lake was with my mother about thirteen years ago... it was quite beautiful with rose gardens. Fast forward to recent times and I visited again. My memory is imprinted a little differently to the landscape that is there now. It's been slightly altered and Benalla continues to evolve as a rural town making it a place to go. It is now a destination in itself. The 4.25 kilometre track is stunning. You can choose how much of it you want to walk, or you can take advantage of the seating along it's edge taking a break to enjoy the breathtaking serenity. Lake Benalla provides habitat for numerous birds from ducks and pelicans to cockatoos and kookaburras and you will definitely see them here. When I wandered around here it was late in the afternoon on a Friday and I was surprised there were not more people taking advantage of this beautiful area...but then, Covid has changed things so much. .. Still it's worth masking up and going for a walk. See more..

  16. 3.0 Marysville Trout and Salmon Ponds (63 reviews)
    - Can be hit or miss depending on the day
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
Marysville Trout and Salmon Ponds image
I've been here a few times now and the staff can be hit and miss as can the fishing. As an experienced angler, I know most of the tricks of the trade and it's rare that I wouldn't catch a trout but the students I had with me virtually had no luck. You can get you rods and tackle from the shed and pay a small fee. If you catch a trout you have to keep it. There is a lovely man there (sorry I've forgotten his name) who will gut and prepare the fish for you for to cook. There are plenty of tables and chairs around to sit on and even some undercover areas. You can come here most times but check out their website for further information. There is plenty of parking at the top of the hill at the entrance. Bring cash. Makes it easier for everyone. See more..

A vast freshwater lake surrounding g the town of Colac. Visited the parklands town side with a Lakeside walk, playground, Botanic gardens and reserve noted. Able to park my van under the extensive canopy to wait out the electrical storm and exyteme heat. Unfortunately due to conditions I was unable to fully explore on foot but have noted the area for future explorations. Lovely building facades, plenty of history and a yacht and bowls Club within the precinct along with shady tree canopy and winding pathways through the park. Only thing missing on the town side was a cafe or food venue. An opportunity missed? A place for all the family catering for groups, parties and outings with special memories sure to be created. St George's Lake image
St Georges Lake is a place that I have never visited despite visiting Creswick many times. This time we decided to finally make a visit. We folllowed our GPS which took us the long way around via the dirt road which was very frustrating. When we arrived I was surprised at the size of the water body and the amount of people visiting. it had been a very hot day though. There were people camping, having a picnic, swimming and using non-motorised sporting equipment. A surprise find in Creswick but I guess there is no beach nearby. See more..
  21. 4.5 Lake Elizabeth (38 reviews)
    - Great short walk, better if you use the campground
Sunday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent 2-3 hours Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Lake Elizabeth image
If tent camping with drop toilets and no drinking water is your theme than do not miss this one. Located within 10 min unsealed drive from Forest, this campground offer about 20 well maintained sites, fire pits and benches among surrounding by trees and ferns. About 1km walk will take you to the breathtaking lake Elizabeth (about 3 km to walk around it) with birds and platypus! The whole experience was extremely positive and highly recommend. A few notes about the logistics. Cars can not be parked next to the sites and we used the bottom 15 min unloading parking to get our stuff from the car. It is not a big deal and you can use a dolly if you have one. See more..
  22. 4.5 Churchill Island Marine National Park (37 reviews)
    - Very pleasant afternoon

Churchill Island Marine National Park image
Located south of Rhyll, on the eastern shore of Phillip Island, in Western Port, Churchill Island Marine National Park extends from Long Point south of Rhyll township to the north point of Churchill Island and along the island's western shore to the bridge. Bird watching is a popular activity in the park. Many birds feed, roost and breed around the bay and you may be able to spot birds that have migrated from across the globe. Canoeing is an ideal way to explore the mangroves and estuarine conditions. Yachting is increasingly popular in the bays relatively tranquil waters. On calm days snorkelling and diving among the sea grass meadows will reveal a myriad of crustaceans fish and other marine species. See more..

We were fortunate enough to have booked a few days in a holiday home on the river and enjoyed waking up to the peaceful river views each day. The boardwalk was excellent and a lovely way to see the area. It's used constantly by so many but never crazy busy. We liked to use it for evening walks - walking along, crossing over the bridge to the seaside and back. See more..

    Pink Lake image
The lake wasn’t pink but it’s close to the highway with plenty of parking so worth a visit if Yu happen to drop by. Try access to the lake is not pathed so not suitable for wheelchair access or rainy days. The lake smelt like rotten fish but apparently its bacteria in the water that gives it a pink colour. There is a shaded sitting area and public toilets. See more..

After visiting in school holidays (September) and seeing Murray swollen, unfortunately a month later floods affected many towns like Echuca. Mount Beauty Pondage image
Whether you're a local, staying nearby or simply passing through the Bicentennial Park is a wonderful place (for adults and children alike) to pass the time of day. In terms of playground equipment it's better equipped than most. There are several slides and swings along with ample things to climb, bounce and swing on. There are BBQs and undercover tables if you'd like to enjoy a picnic here. Considering the utterly stunning and picturesque view you'd be hard pressed to find a better place to do so. It's also a great spot to stretch your legs - the circular pondage track is an easy 3km loop that features spectacular views. It can be enjoyed by bike or on foot. The park also features public toilets and ample parking. Each visit we found children (and families) playing happily. Who can blame them? There's a lot on offer here to enjoy. See more..

    Ess Lagoon Reserve image
Ess lagoon is a free camping area in Casterton. It's a lovely setting, quiet, surrounded by paddocks. Its within a 5 min walk of the shops & the caravan park. It would be even lovelier if the Kelpie Trail was maintained better but already its getting a bit muddy to walk around & down to the river. Lots of birds & in the past I have seen a young echidna toddling along down by the lagoon. There are also small tortoises but I think they hibernate over winter (unsure). See more..

    Goldfields Reservoir image
Enjoyed a short stroll here, very peaceful surrounds. Seems very popular with the locals? QUESTION: Why is the roadway direction the wrong way around? Not only were we confused, but we also witnessed two other vehicles come into the area the wrong way around[according to traffic paint on the road]. Most roads and car parks operate in a clockwise direction!! Surely, we are NOT American! See more..

Great place for a walk and fresh air. The loop around the reservoir didn't take long, 15 mins. There were other paths that led off into the forest, one took us to a second car park. Loop around reservoir plus walk to second car park and back was 40 mins. The path was nice and dry even after heavy rainfall and storms. Electric BBQ's, tables and toilets on site. No under cover shelter. Spotted two Koala's not too far from the carpark. See more..
  35. 3.0 Hepburn Pool (14 reviews)
    - Secret sacred garden
Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Hepburn Pool image
Hepburn Pool is a forgotten treasure which many visitors to Hepburn Springs would never be aware of. The owners of the Bellinzona Grange hotel explained that it was once the hotel pool and was built in the 1930's. You can find it behind this hotel, downhill at a street called The Pool Way. Steps and a ramp continue down to the pool itself and the secluded park around it. It was built into Spring Creek and became a competition pool for state swimming championships. A concrete weir separates a shallow children's pool from the main pool. You can still see the numbers of each lane painted on the walls at the deep end. There are plenty of seats and a barbeque area. A sign says this is a sacred aboriginal spot and you can certainly feel something magical about the place. I wouldn't suggest swimming in the former pool, it looks rather murky now. See more..

I grew up heading to Lake Boga every Summer and these days it's nostalgic to re-visit... I believe visiting it in Spring was the most delightful time to visit. The weather was 29C and it was perfect. These days there is a cafe on the water's edge, gorgeous playgrounds, museums, mosaic story boards, historic artefacts and ... a really stunning view of the water. It's well used by people who fish and actively participate in water sports. There is even a yacht club here. The day we visited it was overcast but the area is beautiful and it makes for an easy walk... as it's fairly flat. What we did notice is there are cabins available in the reserve area. I imagine waking up next to that lake would be pretty special. Further to this, it's not too far from the Main Street so you could easily walk to the lake from most places in town. See more..
